Police Recruitment - R.C.M.P.
The RCMP will require you to go through a challenging
selection process. The recruitment process will include
a written test called the RCMP Police Ability Test or
RPAT test. The RCMP recruitment process consists of the
following stages:
Stage 1: Information Session
Contact your local RCMP Detachment and make arrangements to
attend an information session. The session will assist you
in determining your suitability for police officer duties.
Stage 2: Written Testing
After the initial information session, contact your local
RCMP Detachment to schedule a date to write the RCMP Written
Exam. The Exam consists of two parts; Police Aptitude Test (RPAT)
and the Six Factor Personality Questionnaire.
The RCMP Police Aptitude Test (RPAT) consists of 114
questions. The final mark will be changed to reflect a
standardized score out of 5.00. The pass mark in this case
will be 3.20 which is approximately 66 to 68 percent. All
applicants have to pass this test in order to continue on in
the application process. The RPAT tests the following
aptitudes: Observation, Memory, English Composition
(grammar, spelling, vocabulary), Logic, Judgement,
Computation, Comprehension.
You will also be required to take a Six Factor Personality
Questionnaire (SFPQ).
Stage 3 - Physical Test
4. Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE). The
PARE is a job related physical ability test which is a
condition of employment as a Regular Member of the RCMP.
Unless an application package is forwarded it is not
necessary to obtain PARE Certification. When an applicant is
notified in writing by the Recruiting office, you will then
be responsible to arrange for PARE testing at the nearest
site. The PARE certificate is valid for six months. You must
obtain medical clearance from a physician in order to take
the test. You are responsible for when and where you choose
to take the PARE test and you are responsible for the fee of
approximately $40.00 plus tax each time you take the test.
You are also responsible for any expenses associated to PARE
Certification, including fees charged by your physician to
obtain medical clearance. If you are selected for an
interview, you will be notified that PARE Certification is
necessary to proceed forward in the application process.
Stage 4 - Interview
Selected applicants are interviewed. Recommended applicants
then have their names placed on the Post Interview Ranked
List (PIRL) where they are subjected to further competition.
Your combined RPAT and Interview scores will determine your
standing on the PIRL list. Selected applicants will be sent
a Conditional Offer of Enrollment to acknowledge and return.
Stage 5 - Background Investigation
Once the Conditional Offer of Enrollment is received,
applicant files are then forwarded for a background
investigation to confirm their suitability.
Stage 6 - Medical and Psychological
If your PARE certificate remains valid at the final stage of
processing, medical and psychological examinations with the
RCMP designated physicians are scheduled. Various medical
tests are conducted including a vision examination and
hearing test.
