Question 1

Popular "happy hours" can cause binge drinking and rapid consumption of alcohol should be discouraged, the Australian Medical Association says. But the Australian Hotels Association in South Australia believes most Adelaide pubs and clubs run responsible happy hours.

This week, the British Beer and Pub Association, representing about half of the UK's bars, said it would crack down on happy hours and promotions encouraging "irresponsible drinking". AMA SA branch president Chris Cain said happy hours could encourage binge drinking if improperly managed.

"Anything that encourages people to drink rapidly, such as reducing prices between a certain hour so that people are rushing to buy drinks, could encourage binge drinking," he said. "We would not condone that and it should be discouraged." Hotels in Adelaide were "generally" responsible, he said. He said cheaper non-alcoholic drinks and food should be offered during happy hours.
