Hey,

So the past 2 weeks hae been crappy. My father was in a serious accident on Feb, 12. We were cutting down a 60 foot tree and it fell on him. He did survive (although the ambulance and doctors at cobourg did not think he would), he underwent brain surgery and has a couple fractures in his skull along with his face and pelvis. most ribs are broken and so is his shoulder. And so on. Good news is he will be fine, bad news is a week after me and my boyfriend were driving to sunnybrook to see him on a 50km road. It also says fines increased and radar on the sign. So the officer stops us and tells him he was going 74 in a 50. He asks for the licence and stuuf than says hold on and brings back a ticket and says bye. We tryed asking him about it, since it was our first time being stopped, but he just said to read it. So we found out later it was 3 demerit points, and have to go to court cause he doesnt want the points cause insurance and what not. Does anyone have past experience or advice as to what to expect or if they think he will get the points removed? Also today he got a letter saying there was an overdue parking ticket from lawarence avenue in toronto in Jan. But i know 100% it wasnt us. We ive in Colborne and other than the hospital have not been near toronto in a long time. The only think they sent was the letter and the plate number, but it wasnt us there, what should we do? before any of this we both have never been even stopped by the police or had any tickets. Any advice would be greatly appeciated. Thanks.

Hi Bridget-

I saw your posting and feel sooo awful- I'm really sorry to hear about your dad- here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

Although I can't offer any real advice for you- just keep in mind that bad luck comes in three's.....nothing but good things are coming your way :D

They are x police officers that are either retired or what ever, but you can hire them to get you off or reduced speeding tickets. I think it is called points ask around surely somebody will know a number in your area!Good luck.

Get a paralegal to fight your ticket in the court. They usually charge about $250 for a ticket, but in my opinion it does worth it because demerit points stay on your record for two or three years. These paralegal are pretty good, for more than 70% they can win the court so no points, no ticket on your record.

well if you do not want to spend that much, then just set up a court (MAKE SURE plea NOT GUILTY while filling out the form for the court). Then on the court date, go there and if the police officer does not show up, your ticket will be withdrawn. so no point no ticket on your record. But this is the risk you are taking, whether the police officer will show up or not.

I had a ticket 2 years ago and went with the idea if the cop doesn't show up I get off scott free, not the case. For the first court appearance it was only me the judge and his secratary. He asked if I wanted to dispute the ticket and if I did they would arrange another court date with officer present. I know when I got my ticket he went easy on my so I walked out of the court room and paid it. It is true that for this next court date if he didn't attend I would get off. The deciding factor for me to pay it was there were a few cops there in plain clothes who told me they love when people come to court to fight their tickets because they only have to make a brief court appearance and are paid for 4 hours. With this being said, and confirmed by a friend of mine who is a officer in the area, I just paid it. What I would be interested in trying if I were to get another would be the paralegal option, but I'm not sure about how they go about handling the ticket hopefully it is more the just checking to see if the officer dots his i's and crosses his t's where he is suppose to.

Thanks to everyone who wrote back, i appreciate the advice. Thanks to Colette i also apppreciate your concern. We did call in about the parking ticket, and they had the wrong licence plate. So that was dropped. I think we are going to go in and just tell them about our explanation and just to lower it so no points are taken. I never expect the police officer to not show up cause we all know they do. Thanks to everyone again.
