Hello Everyone
Just out of curiousity. What are some good exercises to help out with the dummy drag?
Thanks

try tying a rope around a tire. also, you can go to a hardware store and get a bag of cement or something. there are few things that weigh 150 pounds in one package, so you may have to just practice while pulling less weight, or somehow put two things together. there is always the option of actually trying to pull a person. while working with a trainer, she had me pull her around the gym.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Those are some pretty good ideas. I tryed a practise and everything was going great til I reached that dummy drag.

Squats, calf raises. You'll feel the legs burn when you drag mr smith, just keep going

Stairs are your friend/enemy.

Brother, Sister, or Friend who weighs about 125lbs, drag them around for practice lol J/K
As mentioned above, squats and stairs are good, anything lower body, legs, lower back will help.

I use my 100lb heavy bag with my 55lb son riding it.
It makes him feel good that he is helping me through the process and he also has a lot of fun doing it

lol i find the prep isn't really something you have to train for. the dummy drag is easy as long as you hold it right. it's an easy test, but difficult to get an excellent score. i forget what my time was, but i had a lot of time to spare. don't worry about it.......unless your th ekind of person that is out of breath running for short distances

I was told I did great with everything until I got to the dummy drag. I had trouble gripping the wrists. Once I was able to grip the wrists I had trouble pulling the dummy on the padding they had on the floor. Which still makes no sense to me why you would need padding on the floor to begin with.
When I tryed the practise with the OPP they didn't have any sort of padding on the floor and I passed no problem. Anyone else have this sort of problem?

I've done the PREP tons of times, through college, then testing twice (one renewal), then again a few times at OPC never did we once have padding on the floor under the dummy.

See thats what I was thinking as well when I tested. I'm looking at the dummy drag and thinking what is that under it? Walked over and felt it and it was like a thin kind of carpet padding. I'm not saying i'm superman by any means but it felt like pulling 400lbs not 150lbs. Testing with OPP this time around for the PREP.

Was it with ATS as well? What did you think did you find it sort of difficult as well at all? I really don't see the point of it.

ya it was ats. it sure doesnt help thats for sure. I got to the dummy with enough time to walk tho. buddy was telling me to hurry up so I told him I wasnt there to set any records. I had 2:35 on my watch he had 2:32 when I finished. a pass is a pass, why bust a nut trying to get done fast only to do the beep test right after

You want to do something that works the top of the thighs. Not sure what muscle group that is.

I'm not sure what its called as well. I think I know which one your talking about though. It's the one that usually hurts like crazy for days after doing squats i think lol. Above the knees?

Ever consider trying the fireman carry vs. the wrists? I liked the fireman carry because there is much less resistance sitting there on the ground.
I scored 2 min 11 seconds on my recent prep test, and I made one mistake, skipped 1 to many stairs by accident and had to go back down the stairs and back up again which burned some time. I was aiming for 2 minutes flat, figured if I discount the stair mistake I would have had say 2 min 7 seconds or so. not reaching my mark but still good.
Anyway good luck!

I was thinking of trying that next time actually. I've been told it can be a bit hard on the back though. How does the fireman carry work? Dont think i've seen it done before.

You want to do something that works the top of the thighs. Not sure what muscle group that is.quadriceps.
Squats for general development of quads and leg raises for the lower quads.
Or climb lots and lots of stairs.
:) Hope that helps.
I failed my PREP last week... more so the shuttle. When ATS does a double check on your blood pressure you end up at the end of the line in the pursuit/restraint. I was dead, dead last. Waited for about 40+ people to go before I went. By the time I finished, I had exactly 10minutes (the bare minimum) to recover for the shuttle run. They give you a minium of 10minutes to recover. Oh well... short end of the straw and need to improve the cardio a bit more.
Tip from ATS: Make sure you go in with regular BP so you don't get put at the bottom of the pool. Higher up in the pools gives you more recovery time in between. Had no idea why my BP was high. I'm pretty healthy with no history or heart problems or related. But I was nervous as hell doing it for the first time.
I asked a friend of mine who passed his PREP and other people and they were all getting an average of 20minutes or more. My buddy had 45minutes in between the two.

That's a REALLY good tip/point - it can make a difference!
What was your blood pressure measurement? Was it higher than the 144/94 the first time you got it measured? I have a 'normal high' blood pressure and am worried that I may be sent to the back of the line aswell. My doctor says that I do not need any medication but I'm worried about it spiking at the time of the measurement.

If I remember correctly I was in the 160+/90 range on my first BP.
My second BP before I took the pursuit was 140+/80+ (I don't remember the exact numbers)
A normal BP for most people is 120/80. I typically sit at 120/76.
I remember reading somewhere when preparing for the PREP to ice your wrists down before getting a BP done, it'll lower it.
In addition to all that, I did have a another ATS rep come up to me after the fact and all and say "I just want to let you know, our stats show the majority of people who end up at the end of the line, usually the last few end up failing. Regardless of their physical condition good or bad. It's probably all the anxiety and mental fatigue that burns them out."
Thanks for your reply.
One other question, did they use the mercury measuring device or a digital one?

Ive ended up at the end of the line because of high BP and yes I had to bust balls to pass more so than usual. At level 1.5 on the shuttle I had puke in my throat. It all comes down to how bad you want it, I told myself that failing isnt an option
Thanks for the input. I ended up passing all the tests and am now waiting for the results of my bpad.
thanks again!
For those that are considering buying the package on this site, I would highly recommend it. It is an invaluable tool, and I actually found that the pati questions were harder on this site than the actual test!

really? i thought the Mapping and Syllogisms were harder on the actual test.
but the WCT was definitely easier.
and i was one of the few to have high BP as well... as was sent to the end of the line... the very very end. i was the LAST person to go back to the gym after checking and re-checking my BP. I'm never that high... i guess it was all the nerves and such. I passed the obstacle course with a lot of time to spare but i failed the shuttle run. :( My quads were dead after the obstacle course. lol.

I was advised by some EMS friends to eat bananas.
I'm redoing my PATI end of October and my PREP later on. I don't think I want to do them in the same day again.

Ya i had some bananas with me when i was tested.... but i didn't have any between the obstacle course and the shuttle run because i was preoccupied by pain from my quads. I should've ate all i could though... i was STARVING right before i did the obstacle course.
Ya, i wouldn't do those on the same day either, lol.
I was really lucky. The appraiser that took my bp looked at the gauge and asked me plainly if I was nervous, which I replied, hell yes. He then allowed me to breathe deeply for a minute or so until my bp lowered to the high normal.
I took the test on august 23 and found the mapping was definitely easier than the policeprep stuff. Syllogisms were at most on par with the police prep. I recieved my results the same day of the test, I really believe that the material on this site helped.

lol. the appraisers let me breathe deeply and relax all i wanted but my BP still wasn't going down enough. lol.
i tested on the same day. some of the mapping questions were different than any other policeprep questions... and the syllogisms... there were like 4 questions that i haven't seen on policeprep either. oh well... i still passed them all so it's ok. thank goodness for this site. =)
