hi, im going to be sitting the victoria police entrance exam in 4 weeks, and ive been using this site now for almost a week. Anyone have any suggestions or hints.. or anyone going to sit the test?
steve
I'm also sitting the exam on the 15th down in chaddy.
Just brushing up on the math and its comming back pretty quick, and running though all the spelling.
Good luck to you steve I know how you feel. And the worst part, we'll have to wait another three weeks to get our results!
All the best, Ally
Just noticed the date on your post! So if you do check back here how did you go? Any advice for us kids who are about to sit the exam in a few weeks!
Hope you did well Steve, Ally
Hey Ally,
I'm sitting the exam at Chadstone on the 15th too. How's your preparation going? feeling confident?
I actually live a fair way from Chadstone, out in Hoppers Crossing, but there are no exams out this way for a while so I decided to just make the trip over there. Where are you from? What sort of work do you do now?

Hye ally, how did you go on your test on the 15th. I went ok I guess. Not sure about the math part. I got one wrong and didnt have a chance to check the others, time went too fast.
hope i got through...im just waiting on those results..where were you sitting..i was in the middle row, at the back of the room. i sat next to a girl. which one was u?
steve
Hoppers Crossing hey! Same dealio as moi I live out in StAlbans. But I'm originally from Bulleen. (for the guy with no name)
I got it wrong steve the dates, I'm the 15th of Oct at the chaddy campus of tafe.
Study is going ok math is comming back to me quickly and just brushing up on my spelling. The writing part I'm already pretty confident on.
Started study under a week a go and I'll keep going till the exam.
And for what I was doing before I decided to apply for the police, I was working in Media for seven years. I'm now 25 and ready to apply for the police force, something I wanted to do many years ago but the media world wisked me away for a little while.
So steve, any hints you can give us considering you've done the exam now?
Haha, guy with no name here...forgot to sign in or put my name in that last post - It's Paul.
Well nice to put a name to the writing. Only a few more weeks to our exam and I'm sure we will both do fine.
Then comes the copious amounts of interiviews and test afterwards.
Fingers crossed for us all.
Yeah, personally it's the interviews that I'm worried about. I've done ok on all the practice exams and I've been studying all the material, and I'm pretty fit so I'm not too concerned about the fitness test, but I don't think the interviews are going to be easy - time will tell.
Chin up you'll be fine in the interview. You already know what kind of questions they will ask. Just be yourself. The hardest part is all the waiting.
From what I can gather Paul, they will want you. Just sit down enjoy the conversation, and prepare the reason for why you want to be a cop. Make sure you learn as much as you can about the role also. And, recall all the things you've done in your life that will make you the ideal person.
You'll be sweet! And, if you ever pull me up for speeding or robbing a old grandma's purse, be gental!
That's good advice Ally, thanks for the vote of confidence. I guess the good thing for me is that I am quite young still so if I don't get in first time around I can always have another go in 12 months time - but for now I'm focusing on getting in first shot!
Hey, you mentioned in an earlier post that you are still brushing up on your spelling for the test. Did you know that Vetassess make the entire list of words available for you to study? They are on their website to download at vetassess.com.au
And if I ever do stop you for robbing an old lady's purse, you're going to be in serious trouble...not really appropriate behaviour for a police officer!
Yeh I have the 14 pages of spelling words. But, I'm a paranoid ding dong head and I dont want something like spelling to be the reason for why I fail. So far I'm not to worried about it though.
I'm still trying to get though those ten math questions in ten mins. I pass each time but hell if I focus on each questions and get it done to my best ability I might only get 7 done.... That means I can only get two wrong. So, I'm trying to speed that up so I get all ten done in ten mins giving me a better chance of a pass. - told you I was paranoid!
And of course you'll get in. If you don't get in I'll donate my left leg to science! You'll romp it in champ!
It sure is one big list hey? Paranoia is probably a good approach, at least that way you will study enough. I actually know a girl who sat the exam about 12 months ago and she passed everything BUT the spelling.
I'm having the same trouble with the maths, I can work all of the questions out in my own time, but the clock is ticking! I guess it's just a matter of learning the formula to work the questions out the quickest possible way. Practise will make perfect. I also make a point of reading and understanding the detailed answer solutions after each test, sometimes it shows a way of figuring out a problem more quickly than the method I have used.
Anyway, off for a bit more study for me. Then going for a work out, gotta be ready for that fitness test too!
I was worried about the fitness test considering I've been slack for the past couple of years. But, from looking at what you have to do... As long as you can jog 1k and swim 50m you'll be fine.
Yeh, well the girl who failed the spelling that would be frustrating. Its horrible, its not that we cannot do each part of the exam and pass its the length. Four hours of tests can be a ball breaker!
Well not to long till we head on down to chaddy from the westside.
Have a good weekend and good luck with your study. I'm going to keep grinding those math skills to make my wit lighting fast.
Does anyone know if the Math part in the Victorian Exam is also Multi Choice like our online exam?

Hey Guys,
I was talking to a friend who did the Vic police test about 1-2years ago. She is now in the police force. She said from memory that the maths test is NOT multiple choice and you must show working out. She failed maths with a score of 4/10 the first time. She passed everything else, revised her maths and passed 10 out of 10 the second time in maths. She seemed to think it was easier than what was on Police prep as well so maybe they overprepare us so we are super fast at it!
Remember guys if you fail one or more areas you only have to repeat those areas.
A good tip for getting fast at maths is make a page full of one type of question and do it over and over and over. Its the only way it sticks in your head and makes you fast at it.
My only problem at the moment is my BMI. I calculated to be about 30BMI at about 105kgs. To get to the maxium 27.5BMI i have to loose about 11KG!
Anyway when I do my test on the 9th of Dec I will come back here and give a full report for everyone else here!
Oh and a few things that my friend told me for the interview was to be confident but not cocky and think about your answers.
One question they asked here was as follows:
There is an area in a small nieghbourhood where drug usage on the street has hit record levels. Syringes are being left everywhere and the worst is near the local shops. How would you combat this problem?
Her answer included such things as increase police patrols in the area. If i is a remote area maybe setup a satelite station. Liase more with the local community and shop owners. Employ the use of security guards and education is good way to go as well as prevention is better than cure.
Hoped that helped you guys out.
Carl
Hey Carl,
So what else did your mate say about the Math test? Any particular area we should focus on? Is it worded like the ones on police prep? Or a mixture? Sorry for all the questions but anything to help!
Good luck for Dec!!!

hey allly,
steve here..i sat the test on the 17th sept and am still waiting on the results..i too hate maths and think i didnt do well..the questions are alot easier than the police prep site which is good. the only thing that stuffed me up was the time and i went back to check my answers...10min under pressure isnt alot of time to work out maths calculations without a calculator..and u have to make sure the answer is correct..not even by 1 number out can you be..
u have to show your workings...not multiple choice..u have to calculate the answer yourself..hope that helps guys..let me know if you need anymore help..i too may need to resit the math part like carls friend..if so..ill be there in nov.. cause ill miss the october testing..
Great thanks Steve.
So what where the questions like? Worded, or a mixture of worded and just simple sums.
And, considering you have done the exam does it focus on percents and long division like police prep?
Anything you can rem just spill young man... SPILL!
Cheers big ears!! And, don't worry about your exam. You might get a surprise and pass the maths! But, if not! Not a problem! From the general tred most people have problems with the math. - hence why I'm trying to nail it now.... Math is a evil old man on a rocking chair! (I hope this post is readable I'm tired, and I have square eyes from looking at the computer for to long)
Hey Carl and Steve,
Thanks for the insight guys, I'm sure it will be a help for people like Ally and myself when we sit the test in a couple of weeks.
By the way Carl, if you are looking to drop a few kilo's, I can highly recommend an ebook called \"Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle\" by Tom Venuto, which you can download from www.burnthefat.com - This guy is actually a natural body builder (doesn't/never has used steroids). You probably have no interest in body building at all, but these guys are the experts at losing fat without losing all of your lean muscle at the same time. I used this information personally for excellent results in my own health and fitness and can't recommend it highly enough.
Hope it helps!
Cheers, Paul.
hey ally,
there's both worded and simple sum quesions. from memory i think its half worded and half simple sumss...eg 3452+354654.
well checked the letter box today..nothing but bills...another day of waiting for the results...if I see the envelope is big...should mean there's an application form in it and ive passed..if not..its only bad news..oh god I hope ive passed..
im trying to get into vic pol before the entrance is changed to the university degree....god help us all..hopefully we get in at the same time and we're at the academy together hey!! that would be good.. we already know a bit about each other..hehehe hope this helps...
Hi Steve,
Are they really planning to change the entrance requirements to a uni degree? I hadn't heard anything about that - I better make sure I pass first time and get in quick if it is the case!
steve
10-03-2005, 08:01 AM
they certainlyare mate.. either mid 2006 or mid 2007..the reason i know.. im a sheriff with the department of justice and have close links to victoria police. its currently in the process of being changed.. u will need a 4 yr degree in public safety (policing). without that you wont be able to apply..but the thing is..who is going to go and do a course for 4 yrs and then apply..its ludicrious.
Well if thats the case I hope I make it in soonish before they make the possible changes next year. Its already a long process so we might be pushing it also.
So, they are simple sums and questions. Hopefully I'll be ok then. I'm passing the math tests on here. But, I only compelete about 7-8 questions in ten mins and I usually get one wrong - well my wrong is if I cannot get the answer with my pencil and paper I don't guess.
Btw Steve was the reasoning exam similar to the one on here also? Give us the break down on all you can rem about the whole test.
And, it would be great if we all passed and headed off to boot camp together. Yay for 6-30am starts in Glen Waverly!!!!
Back to the books.
btw good luck with your mail tomorrow! I'm already nervous about getting my mail and I haven't even done the exam yet!
Well, adding a four year degree to the entry requirements would certainly thin out the competition!
What I'm wondering about is the gap between when they bring this new degree requirement in and when the first group of students finish the course. Will it mean that when the entry requirements change, they will have no new recruits for four years while the first bunch of students finish the degree? Unless people are already going through this degree in public safety? But why would anybody do the degree when at the moment you can apply without it?
It will be interesting to see how they handle that change over period.
We all better just make sure we pass everything first time and get in ASAP. I'm with you Ally, yay for 6.30am starts indeed!!!
^^^^OK, I'm the guy with no name again, I really should remember to log in^^^^
Haha Paul.
Yeh I see where your comming from. They might introduce the course next year or the year after that. But, they wont stop the exams etc for about three years/four years I'm guessing till the first group has compeleted its course. But your right, why would you do the course if you can do the exam... Probably the fresh 18 year old out of high school might.
btw Steve! My fingers are crossed for you!! Good luck today!
Steve
10-04-2005, 11:54 AM
well guys, no mail today.. :(
the reason for the course is mainly because once you're appointed a position, your first 4 years as a constable you are actually doing the degree both in the field and in class.. you're assessed on it that way. what they want to introduce is that ppl already have the degree completed and paid for by non other than ourselves.
it was in the paper at the start of the year. NSW police have this as part of their recruitment. you have to have done the degree before you can apply. not sure how it will all work. but thats what they're going ahead with. its currently in the process with uni's they have a tender out to see which uni will cater for it and who gets the contract.
anyway..ill keep you posted..let me know if you have any other questions guys..ill try and answer them.
oh and ally, the reasoning test is very similar to the police prep site..so keep studying.
Thanks for all the info Steve, much appreciated.
You must be going mad waiting for those results! Fingers crossed for tomorrow's mail.
Cheers Steve so at least I know what to expect from the reasoning.
Bummer about the mail though! Hopefully they send out your results within the next few days! I'll cross my fingers, legs and eyes for you...
You mentioned the math test was different to police prep, how so steve? Does it still concentrate on percentages/division like police prep?
btw how are you going Paul? A week and a bit for us.
Good luck Steve I'm thinking about you and your results.... I'm sure you'll be fine.

YEAH!!! Well done Steve, great work mate, congratulations!
With your background and experience you won't have a problem getting into the academy from here, you must be wrapped, well done.
My preparation is going pretty well thanks Ally, I've passed all the practise exams on here, been getting around 80% - 90% on the tests so I'm feeling fairly confident - still a little apprehensive though, pressure will be on when we get to exam day. How's your preparation going? Any sections in particular you are having trouble with?
Hi Jo, how's it going?
So November 5th in Frankston hey? should be plenty of time to study all of the info on the site. My maths where a bit rusty too when I started to look at the practise exams, I'm only 21 but I've been out of school since I was 16 so haven't had to do too much math for a while. Don't worry it will all come back to you pretty fast.
So tell us about yourself, where are you from? What do you do for a job at the moment?
sorry bout all the replys it kept telling it didnt work, but it did. i live in Korumburra in Sth Gippsland. Im at uni, 2nd year, so im going to defer next year. i work as a security guard on the weekend. Im also 21 aswel. what about you?
I'm from Hoppers Crossing (Western suburbs of Melbourne) and currently run my own little screen printing business from my garage at home, which isn't exactly making me millions and which I will be only to happy to close down if I can get into the academy - A man can only look at so many t-shirts!!!
So what are you studying at uni? anything related to police work at all?
Have you worked a full time job before? I ask because the people at Victoria Police recruitment asked me if I had been working when I called to find out if I might be able to get in. I guess working security will probably work in your favour quite a bit too.
Well best of luck with your preparation for the exam, hope it all goes well for you.
thanks, hope it all goes well for you to. Im studying a BA (Bachelor of Arts) nothing to do with police work. No i haven't been at school all my life. went from yr 12 into tafe for a year then straight into uni. Do you like doing the printing? well i have to go, i got to go to class.

hi guys,
hi to the newies as well.. Jo...
good luck on the 15th all.. i have a confirmed interview date.. being the 13th october.. next thursday im off for my interview with senior sergeant matheson.
I cant wait!!!!
keep doing the tests on this site guys, it helped me alot. its almost the same as the actual test itself. especially the reasoning....
Hey Steve,
An interview date already! and only have to wait a week! good for you mate, hope the interview goes smoothly for you.
Thanks heaps for passing on all your advice from the process, I'm sure you've given the rest of us a bit of an advantage from your experience. I'm looking forward to hearing about your interview...I want the inside info on that before I get there too!
Thanks again Steve.
Steve! You go boy! I'm looking forward to finding out how you go with the interview. One tic, I have to whipe another tear away! So proud!
Well Paul I'm ok with the report writing, I'm fine with the english and reasoning. But, I'm really nervous about the math! I'm pretty handy at math, and I pass each time I do a exam on here. But, I'm just really paranoid that if I have a bad mourning Math could be the one thing I would stuff up. Sometimes your brain will close up for two or three mins and you need to give yourself a break, and I'm worried that will happen during the math and because the exam is only 10mins... a couple of mins is vital! Or it just might be me. I'm sure I'll be fine and worst comes to worst I fail and I have to do it again... Which would suck and I know I can pass but at this stage I just need to learn to relax.
Which considering is crazy, I did do Electrical Eng. at uni before I went off into Media. Its just that I haven't done this type of math in about ten years, give or take. Sucks being 25.
A question for you Paul. How much do you charage for shirts? Do you put on logo's, words on request? Or its all your personal choices?
And welcome Jo, I'm sure you'll smash a home run on the exam. Paul and I are up next so I'm sure we will give you addiontional prep advice in about a week also. And then of course Steve with his interview advice.
btw this msg is long and I'm to lazy to proof read so I hope its readable
hey ally, long post but I think we all understood it.
im sure you will be fine with the math part. if you're passing all the police prep tests, you have nothing to worry about. you will find its much easier than the ones one police prep.
basic math, with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and thats basically it..
just remember though that each test is different. the test i sat will be different to the test that you will be sitting. so there may be other questions on there that I did not do. obviously they do this so that ppl dont go in and remember everything that was on it and tell others so they fluke it. Like i am..hahaha
i will definately tell all about my interview on thursday nite....
Cheers Steve, if thats what was on your exam I should be ok. Hopefully its the same format but obviously different questions.
So your interview is next week hey! I still haven't done my First Aid yet do you need it for that interview or is that after they recommend you?
Either way I'm going to do my first aid in the three weeks of waiting and work more on my fitness. Shh I've been lazy. But, nothing a couple of weeks wont fix.
Well the past three days I haven't done any study due to going up to colac etc - btw long boring drive! So, I have to motivate myself to do some this weekend and during next week. I was doing so well! Then mid last week got busy and was to lazy to fit it in! Lucky I have one more week to do so.
Ok my beautiful people I'm going to tinker on the math again to make sure I nail it.
Al
Steve
10-08-2005, 02:00 AM
hey guys,
not sure if you need your first aid before the interview ally. there's nothing on the application form to say whether or not you have done it. so .....i think you'll need it at your last interview, the panel selection. ive done mine only because I have to for my job, and i get a refresher course every year for it.
dont stress over that though, its the least of your worries.
yeah ive been working on my fitness alot. there's an officer who works with me at the sheriff's office, she was an ex cop..she's filled me in on all the goss about the fitness test and all.. so..ill let you guys know.
there's alot of ex coppers in the sheriff's office..so i have a lot of resources..hehehehe..so to speak.
Hey guys, how is the studying going? what day is your test on again?
i was wondering when do you have to refresh your first aid, is it once a year or two?
Study is study and our exam is on the 15th.
So only a few more days to go. So, in four days the exam will be over, and in another three weeks we will finally see if this site helped us pass.
Good Luck for your exam in Frankston Jo
Thanks Ally, good luck for you to. Let me know how it goes and if you pass. Take care.
Cheers Jo....
I'll make sure to make mental notes on anything that might help you with your study! We have to stick together.
Slowly seeing progression in my study so I'm happy.
I should try more of the reasoning test though. The other parts are comming together but I guess all I can do to improve that department is to run though the test as many times as I can to get my mind clocking over in the right manner.
Not to much longer to go now..... argh... - I think I'm more upset about the three week wait for the results than the test itself!
...only two study days left Ally...you ready???
I think I should be ok, I seem to passing all the practise exams, fingers crossed.
Hey, today is Steve's interview, I'm very keen to hear how that goes, find out what questions are being asked etc.
Anyway, back to do some more study I think. Good luck for Saturday Ally, and good luck on yours too Jo.
I'll never be ready! But, we all know how paranoid I am. All I want to do now is sit the exam bugger this waiting a couple of days.
Like you I do the tests and I pass. I've always pass reasoning and english. Spelling I average 25 out of 30 because I'm really a shocking speller but its improving. I'm like a five year old practicing the words I slip up on - always little things.
And math is the only test I've slipped up on. But, for the past two weeks I've passed every time I've done an exam or made up my own questions I get the questions right. But, I think its not the actual math I'm having a problem with its the ten mins. I need to relax I seem to stress a little in my brain and make small mistakes because I want to move onto the next question. Atm I'm training myself to do the first Six questions in my own time and then the final four I can just whiz though them... As long as I complete the first six questions and get them right I'm as happy as larry and the rest are just a bonus.
I know I can do this exam and pass I just have to relax.
Chaddy here we come!!!!
Hey Ally, I just had a quick look over the vetassess website again and according to their information, we actually have 15 minutes to do the ten maths questions and we also have 2 minutes reading time before the test commences.
My plan is to keep preparing as if it's a ten minute test, then it will just be that much easier when the day comes if we do get 15. Also I'm going to read through the questions in the two minutes reading time, pick out the easiest looking questions and do them first...any algebra is going right to the end that's for sure!
I'm sure we will both be fine, we have done the preparation and when we get there it's going to come easilly don't worry.
Good luck to you both, you will both do really well, don't you worry. The only thing i can't seem to do is long division. for some reason i have never been able to do it. it just doesn't work. Spellings good, i hope i just remember how to put the word into a sentence. so yeah good luck again. you don't need it though, you are both brilliant.
haha thanks Jo. Long divison was tricky at first but I got the hang of it. And when it clicks you'll wonder what you worried about!! Trust me. Any help I can provide not a problem I'm a whiz with the divison now.
Algebra is a biatch but to be honest you'll only get one question on the test if that.
15mins thats great we should be fine then! If we have been trying to do the questions in 10 mins five mins extra is going to be wonderful!
Not doing any study today really just relaxing and then I'll run though the practice exams tomorrow. If I dont know it now no point trying to cram it in and stress myself out. Today is my casual study nothing major, tomorrow is lets crank though as many practice test as I can.
See you on Saturday Mourning Paul - well you know what I mean...
Well you might see me...and I might see you...but neither of us will know it.
Going to have to be up bright and early Saturday morning. It will be the earliest Saturday I've seen for a while that's for sure!
Steve

ok guys and girls,
i had my interview and it went great. the senior sergent thought i was very qualified to fit into victoria police...the main reason was because of my current position as a sheriff. he really didnt ask alot of questions, because he said you already know alot about us and what the job is, what general duties are..
he signed a few papers, filled out a sergeants form and said good luck with it all.
we had a chat for a while about my current job as a sheriff and he asked me some questions he wanted to know personally about how often we arrest ppl and search ppls houses..
fingers crossed for you all this weekend. im sure you'll do great.
That's great news Steve, congratulations!
I didn't think you would have any trouble getting through the interview, considering your experience as a sherrif.
So next you need to focus on that fitness test I guess, are you in pretty good shape? Do you have any indication as to when you might be doing the fitness and medical testing? Hope the wait isn't too long for you.
Congratulations again mate, good luck with the rest of the process.
Well in 24hours the exam will be over and done with!
Well done Steve on the interview!
And Paul I'll see you tomorrow, rem a tap indicates the letter eg 1 tap A, 2 taps B etc.
Well I better make sure the Car is ready for the trip from the west side... 7-30am start hey paul? argh, getting out of bed early on a Saturday is painful, but I used to do 5am starts on Saturday so its kinda a sleep in.
Good Luck
Steve
10-15-2005, 03:06 AM
hey guys when you finish your test make sure you tell me all about it and how it went.
i'll be thinking about you all....
good luck..
steve
No idea how it went! But, I know I cleared the math.
Spelling, I think it will be a 18/22 mark lets hope its a 20!
And the reasoning went so quickly I struggled to finish it. And the same with the english.
And the writing part I just wrote about two pages of crap and I hope its enough to mark and pass with.
So Jo, let me tell you all I know.
Spelling - You need 20/30 so just study up.
Math - Multi, Add, Sub, Dec and percentages. If you know how to do all of those you'll be fine.
Reasoning/English - Just like on this site but you only get 45mins not 90.
And the writing task is different to this site. You can pick from two options. They say you should write about two pages worth. So pick the task that will give your brain an easier path to write.
Did I leave anything out Paul???? How do you feel about today? I feel like a 50/50. If I do happen to burn out on one of the parts it wont be by much but there is a chance.
Ahh now the wait starts. I just hope its a pass I would hate to go back for just the spelling or whatever. But, it wont be the end of the world many people today had to re sit something.
Ok, just looked at all my results on here.
From what I can see at my worst on here I would have still passed... But, for some strange reason when I do the exam on here (reasoning/english) I take about 25mins to do the test and today I struggled to get it done in time. - ended up guessing towards the end to finish.... argh
So now my main concern is spelling. My practice test always bounced from 18-22 and yesterday I did about six test and I cleared 20 five times and one 18. SO, now I'm in limbo.
GOD DARN IT!!! Haven't they heard of SPELL CHECK??? Haha ok I'm tired and cranky.... Do I really have to wait for the results?????
Hi everyone,
Well, I think I did ok, it was a little harder in parts than I was expecting but I feel pretty confident that I would have passed everything.
Maths was a walk in the park after doing the practise exams on here, the reasoning and some of the english was a little tricky in places but I'm semi confident I nailed everything...time will tell...long couple of weeks ahead.
So Steve, any word on the next stage of the process for you yet? do you know when your fitness test will be?
Well Ally, I hope we passed in the end.
Good luck with your test Jo, do the study on here and you will fine.

hey guys,
good luck with it all.. im sure you both passed it.
well paul, i have to wait until the recruiting services branch receives my application from the senior sergeant... they said within 2-3 weeks ill have a response.. so there's alot of waiting guys..because of the current recruiting campaign, it might go alot quicker.. just depends on how quickly they do my criminal and background check.
the next step for me is the medial and the fitness test.. so.. with the fitness test guys, not sure if you already know this, but you only have to pass the test. it doesnt go towards your individual score. and they pretty much push you along until you get it done.. i have a couple of mates that did it and are ex coppers.
well i guess its all a waiting game now for all three of us..ill keep posting until the end..i hope you guys do the same..
steve
I'll be checking here don't you worry Steve.
But, for you steve its not a matter of yes or no its just a matter of the wait. Your in for sure I can feel it in my waters!
Fingers crossed that I cleared the exam. Just have to not think about it for a couple of weeks.... can't do anything now! Can't change an answer etc.
Did someone say paranoid?
Anyhow, glad to hear that you feel good about the exam Paul. I feel like I didn't have any surprises.
Have a good week my friends, Al
Yeah, I beleive you are right about the fitness test Steve, my understanding is that your score for the order of merit is based 50% on the initial education exam and 50% on the final panel interview.
One thing I'm a little concerned about interview wise is that I don't have a really good understanding of what specific tasks a probationary constable would be expected to perform on a day to day basis and how much of your time you might spend doing task \"A\" when compared to task \"B\".
I do have some ideas about where I might like to go with a career long term, but it seems that one of the big things they look for with that first interview is a good understanding of what the role involves as a probationary constable. I think it might pay for me to give recruiting another call this week and have more of a chat with them, might also try to find a current member, or ex-copper who I can get some advice from.
Could you possibly shed some light on this from your experiences and what you have learnt from people you know Steve? Any advice would be enormously appreciated.
Well guys, I'll keep posting here as I progress through the selection process, and a big thanks to everybody else who is doing the same, it definitely makes everything easier to be able to talk about all of this with you guys.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi all, i am thinking about applying to vic police too. I am currently in the new zealand police.
Whats the crime like in melbourne and can anyone tell me where the good areas are to live in?
A friend told me that all the beaches are littered with drug junkies needles, is that true??
Cheers

Maybe a small fraction true. Only our coast line in St Kilda you might find such ferealness on the beach but its not that bad. Otherwise our beaches are beautiful. St Kilda is just a highly populated area and not taken care off the way it should be. But I honestly don't think its that bad.
Melbourne is a great place to live and the crime wouldn't be any worse than in NZ I wouldn't think.
On areas to live depends on how much mula you have and if you have to rely on public transport.
If you have a car any of the outer subs near to the city are good. But, obviously if you need public transport living close or in the city would be ideal. But, if your going for the Vic Police it also depends on where they might station you.
Good luck with it all...

i think ally pretty much summed up everything i was goind to say to the NZ dude... so yeah..
so guys, seeing as though we are all waiting for something now, lets talk about each other..
what do you guys normally do for fun and on weekends? i go out and see movies, i love watching movies..and dvd's.... cleaning my apartment and seeing friends..i love shopping and being out in the sun alot. i love working out too... especially now for the vic pol fitness test, ive been working out every day.. im so buggered today that ive deciced to take a day off.. but back to work tomorrow..... i start work in a couple of hours so i thought id write a quick one..on the nite shift tonite guys...get used to it cause thats all they give you when you become a constable..all the shit shifts... and you wont have weekends off either..they might give you one weekend every 5 to 6 weeks... but hey,..thats part of being a copper and you have to do your time before they'll respect you and give you some good things..
i just want to get through my first 4 years and then become a senior.....
Well my first love was WVBL but after working in Media full time my fitness has slipped and I put on a few KGs. Nothing to horrible but give me a couple of months and I'll be back to peak fitness. Going to buy a bicycle tomorrow with my tax refund, getting bored of jogging and walking.
I've now decided to leave Media behind me and all its crap. I want to be more involved and put more back into the community. As gay as that sounds its ture. Ive been working in a selfish industry for so long. I've always thought about trying out, but I was never mature minded enough I believe I am now.
Like you Steve I'm a DVD nut, and I like nothing more than being in the sun, or bumming around in tracksuit pants. Oh, and of course going to the pub with mates time to time.
Hope the night shift treated you well Steve....

:D Hi everyone,
I have just made the decision to sit the exam in November and have enjoyed reading all your messages - I think I got a lot out of them.
I am a lot older than all you guys, but hope that that doesn't get in the way. I have doing the police prep exams and seem to be okay at that. My fitness level is not what is should be, so am working on that at the moment.
Is anybody else doing exams in November?
Also, Ally, Steve and PMed, what intake dates are you trying to get into do you know?
Would love to hear from you all with any advice etc.
And good luck with all your upcoming interviews and agility tests etc. Love to hear how they all go.
:)
Welcome Andie to our little posting family.
Not sure about what intakes I'm aiming for. Just see how I went in the exam in a few weeks I guess and go step by step. I'm ify about my spelling I know that I'll proabably got 19/30 and if so... GOD DARN IT! No biggie I'll just go and resit that. If you happen to fail anything I think spelling is the way to go easily fixed.
But, if you can think of anything to ask Andie I'm happy to reply. I think in a pervious post I mentioned all I could rem about the exam. But, if you have futher questions fire, and I'll see how good my recall is.
Now I'm really bored not working today and I'm going insane. Probably should go and do something but I can't be bothered leaving the house today.
Where are you doing the exam Andie? What date? Never know I might be there hehe re doing my spelling... but I might surprise myself and pass everything. - If you haven't worked it out yet... I'm a paranoid bee.
hey guys, sorry i havent said anything for a couple of days. i havent been near a comp. so, ally and paul, i was thinking of you both of saturday, im sure you passed with flying colours. how did the put the words into sentences go in the spelling? the only thing i hate that i have to do mine on the 5th is that i have 3 other exams around the same time that i have to study for. but im only trying to pass, dont care what the mark is for those. do care bout the pol exam.
Andie, hi. im doing my exam on the 5th of Nov. at frankston. where are you doing yours? where abouts do you live? i know of a few guys that are older and got into the force. So im sure you will have no problems.
well guys, its a long wait but i think you will find you had nothing to worry about.
...waiting...waiting...man I hope I passed...
Hey Steve, any word from recruiting for your fitness test as yet?
Don't worry Paul I think you hit a home run. Oh one sec something just clicked - just ignor me!
Anyhow, I'm in the frame of mind that if I didnt clear everything (ie spelling) Its a quick fix! But, I hope I have....
We will both be fine.
Steve
10-21-2005, 07:28 AM
hey paul.....
yes the recruiting branch has received my application from the sergeant and they have given me my applicant number....looks sorta like a badge number...
i had my fingerprints taken from the station last nite..cause the senior sergeant forgot to do it at the interview..hehehe..so they've been sent off..but they have given me a document on what forms of ID i need to bring to the fitness test..so...i should hopefully know within the next week or so..
PASS!
Happy days! I wasn't expecting to see any results untill late this week at least, but to my surprise, a letter from vetassess arrived this morning and I'm happy to be able to say that I passed all of the components, and I even surprised myself with some decent scores. I did pretty well on all the sections except for the english writing task (36 out of 50 was enough to get me through) and even nailed 9 out of 10 for the maths!
Well better get my resume sorted out then head down to the local cop shop to make an appointment for an interview. Fingers crossed.
Good job Paul! I'm so proud!
Sadly like I thought I stuffed up spelling. I have to go and resit the biatch. I've booked in for the 11th of Nov.
But, like I've said if I was to fail any part I was hoping it would be spelling. I can fix that. Now I have to not second guess myself during the exam!
Argh, a few more weeks for me. I'm so annoyed with myself. 19/20 for spelling!! WHY OH WHY! Otherwise my scores where lovely.
Another early mourning in Chaddy....
Steve
10-24-2005, 12:39 PM
ally...dont worry ....you will pass second time around..just study a bit more and you will be fine...
paul...well done...you're on your way...what was your final score total matey?
i got 38 out of 50 for the writing task mate so dont feel so bad...i did really well on the english and reasoning and just past the maths..but im happy..
Hi guys...
Nevermind Ally...at least you can just really knuckle down now and focus on that spelling list and you will be fine. A couple of weeks isn't really a big deal at the end of the day (although I'm sure it will feel like a couple of years)...And let's be serious here, congratulations for passing the other four components!
Steve...My final score overall was 215, I did quite well on the english too, not bad on the reasoning and nailed the maths, but scored a little low on the spelling (which surprised me to be honest) and the writing task (no shock there) so those two dragged my score down a little I guess, but in the end I'm quite happy with 215.
How about yourself Steve? Final tally?
Steve
10-24-2005, 11:18 PM
hey paul...final score was 192....i was wrapt...especially when the pass score was only 152.....and i get the bonus points on top of that for
1..having a degree
2. the degree being IT related.
3. having a second language..
so..i dont know what it will shoot up to... ill find out when i have my panel interview...thats where you get the rest of your points...im hoping to do really well there with the help of some of my cop friends..hehehe
Jeepers Steve! An IT degree, second language, experience working as a sheriff and friends who are cops...you're a sure thing mate!
...anybody running a book on this? I'll put 50 bucks on Steve right now...
Steve
10-25-2005, 12:21 AM
well i was really surprised you got your marks that quick.... i had to wait a little longer for mine..but hey..it was worth the wait..
yeah... so..they told me i would get all three bonus marks... and ive been speaking to my friends at the station and ex coppers who are now sheriff's....they've been filling me in on what to say and what not to say at the panel interview..also what to do and what not to do at the fitness test...
im just waiting now on my fitness date..hopefully its in the next couple of weeks.. and then a few weeks after that I hope to be in the panel interview... that would get me done before christmas....
but yeah... im planning to ace the panel interview.. and get really high marks there.. with my experience and bonus marks im hoping to blitz it.. and get on the merit roll by the end of the year..with an intake hopefully early next year..jan or feb...
whats your fitness like paul? can you run 1km without stopping...? pull yourself up onto a 2 mtre ledge? and climb a chain fence?
Thanks guys, I'm alittle annoyed by stuffing up the Spelling. But it wasn't by much and I have a chance to ace it and bring my score over 200 I guess.
Anyhow, I'm happy with my fitness I can easily do 1k but the 2m ledge is a worry. I'm a chick the upper body strength isnt the best. I'm sure in the heat of the moment I'll find the ability but I'll have to work on that. Luckily I'm 5-11 so the height will help with the pull up.
I've actually booked in to see a guy who is an ex recruiter for the police his going to help me get my spelling up. I know sounds stupid but I only have one more chance and even though I know I could do it on my own I want to make sure I ace it. I missed out by one, but this means a lot so I don't want to stuff it up again. He told me he can get me up to 25 easy and teach me some tricks. His also going to coach me for Panel.. Because the exam score and panel score are the important things of course.
Any advice on upper body strength for the ledge boys?
And Paul, if you find someone I'll lay down 'One MILLION dollars'!!!
And again guys, so very proud! I'm about a month behind now... But, I'll catch up!!!!

Hey guys & girls, Its good to know I am not alone in my state of confusion about why a part of the exam went pear shaped. I passed all subjects only to let myself down in the reasoning department, how does that happen, I mean I think im a fairly reasonable individual, missed it by 3 points, AUURRGGHH, booked in for november re-sit also...gonna study my ass off!!!!!!

hey ally, i think i know the guy your talking about...does he live in bentleigh? cause he helps ppl with the test and coaches them through...at a fee$$$$$ of course.....
i fellow officer of mine has been working the area...lots of warrants.... and told me about him...
i think he charges in excess of $100 doesnt he?
well alot of the girls apparently have trouble with the 2mt ledge..... if your tall you have nothing to worry about ...but if you are a little shorter...just try jumping your local fence or backyard fence every day and that will get you started..also lifting weights...
im 6ft 1 so im pretty ok with that..
Hey guys,
I'm actually feeling really confident about the fitness test, I'm a bit of a fitness enthusiast, I usually do four weight sessions in the gym and four cardio sessions (either a 4km run or a swim) each week, so I don't think the fitness test will be a huge problem for me. I'm sure it won't be easy but I'm pretty sure I can conquer it.
I've always felt pretty confident that I could pass the written and fitness tests, it's the interviews I'm particularly worried about. I'm only 21 which probably doesn't work in my favour and I don't know any cops personally who I can get advice from or who can vouch for my suitability as an officer.
Just going to have to spend my time picking Steve's brain after each stage to try and gain as much insight as possible! I'm glad somebody is going through the process just in front of me so I can get a heads up.
Oh Ty I know how you feel! Its such a let down. But, we will be fine I'm sure!
Yeh must be the same guy Steve. Worth a shot I think. Like I said its not worth stuffing up again. He thinks he can get me upto 25 without a problem with a few tricks. I don't mind paying. I wont deny it... I'm not the worlds best speller and I wont let it be the reason for why I miss out.
I'll report back on the guy and if any or you want his details I'll post my email addy.
And the fence idea... good one... I'll do that. Have to work on my fitness so its probably a good thing that I've got a three week delay. Not that out of shape but if I have to wait I can work on it alittle harder.
And my dear Paul... Don't stress so much about the interview! You'll be fine. If I get any info I'll share (from the guy) and of course Steve is our man for all the goss.
btw Ty.... Reasoing pft! All I can say is that the people who passed including me where lucky. Let me guess... You struggled to finish? I did my friend! I was just lucky that my lame ass guesses towards the end gave me the pass!
I don't think its about study Ty I think its more about time management.
In my Scores I did better in the English than the reasoning.. Which I thought was strange! I found it the other way on here. Its because the reasoning was first then the english, and by then I was able to manage my time better.
You'll be fine. Study of course but just work out the best way to read and see as many questions as you can in the 45mins. Because we know you can answer them just have to answer enough in the time.
Hey guys, im sure you will pass ally. congrats on passing everything else and you to paul. Im nervous. You know how you just go up to your local cop shop and get the sergent to interview you? well i have to go to another police station coz my dads the sergent at my one. so its good, hes gonna help me with the interview stuff if i pass the exam. and unlike you all im not that fit. just going to school and working all weekend, didn't leave me time to do and exercise but walk the dog. so that will be my down fall though. well ive still got a bit to try and get there. well take care everyone.

ok so i called the recruiting branch today to see if they got my prints....and they were all rushing out of the office cause it was close to 5pm...apparently they said that the prints had not arrived yet.. so they said call tomorrow...they got me all worried so i called the station and they said they're sure they sent them..but to call back tomorrow when the clerk is on...
guys dont be surprised if this happens to you whether its for your medical or your prints or your fitness test...they have done this soooo many times to my cop friends and ex coppers who are now sheriff's....they said you just have to keep chasing it up or they will forget..
lesson learnt today kiddies..... hehehe..thats whats happening in my world guys..any other news kiddies? paul??? interview?? have you been yet??
Haven't had my interview yet Steve...it's been such a frantic week I haven't even had a chance to make the appointment. I'll be going down to arrange a time for my interview on Monday.
It's a little ironic that now I have decided to close down my business and join the police I'm suddenly getting more orders than ever - I did 200 t-shirt prints yesterday alone!
Anyway, I'm going to get all my ducks in a row this weekend, dust off the resume (haven't used one for some time) and let all of me references know that they might be getting a call, then go down and make an appoinment Monday.
You must be going mad waiting for the next stage Steve...a frustrating experience I'm sure.
I'll keep you posted...
Just a quick update...
Got my resume finished off, filled out all of the application forms, passport photos done etc. My interview is booked in for next Tuesday morning down at Werribee.
Now gotta get ready for that interview, not really sure what to expect so I guess I will just have to stay nice and relaxed and try to present a good case.
Now more waiting...
Anything else happening for anyone?
Nope, just waiting to resit that bloody spelling exam.
Just running though the list and making sure I spend time on the words I have trouble with.
Otherwise I'm a bore.
Steve
11-03-2005, 11:01 AM
hey guys,
im still here..just been really busy...went and got my fingerprints done again on wednesday..and this time i sent them off myself..hehehe..
i think they got them today...
oh and one of the officers i work with who''s the law enforcement liason officer said that my name had come through the security checks today..hehehe..he was like..\"oh yeah i saw you name come up....\"
so i know the application is on its way..
how ya'll doin?
Not much happening for me, just waiting for my interview next Tuesday.
Hey Steve, just a question, not sure how formal your interview was anyway, but do you know whether they usually use questions like...
What would you do in \"X\" situation? or
Tell me about a time when you had to \"X\"...
Just trying to be prepared, nailed the first exam, fitness test won't be a problem, just gotta get myself through the interviews.
Anyway, have a good weekend folks, talk to you all soon.
Paul.
hey guys, sat my exam last saturday, now i just have to wait. I don't like the waiting. any way, good luck with the spelling ally.
Thanks Jo.
Considering its the only thing I have to focus on and I've hand two and a bit weeks I think I'll be fine. Still worried though I keep making small mistakes but when I check over the words I am able to solve the problem before I check to see if I'm right.
But, not much longer to wait now. This Saturday I go back to resit the bugger. I'm aiming for a 30/30 because I know I can do it. Just have to make sure my brain is switched on and I don't make foolish mistakes.
But, don't worry the wait wont be to much longer! And, if you stuff up one section like I have don't worry about it. Gives you time to focus on one part and bring your mark up even more. But, I'm sure you aced it first time.
And, I feel your pain. Waiting is a biatch! I'm back on the block next week!
Hi all,
Just got back from my station interview, all went very well. The sergeant was quite happy with me, said he was impressed with my test scores and everything else looked fine. He asked me a couple of questions then we chatted for a while about what to expect at the panel interview and how to do well, then I had my fingerprints done and that was that.
He said he would send off his report recommending me by the end of the day, I chatted for a few minutes with the constable who did my fingerprints and I was done. It was easier than I had expected, don't know what I was so stressed about now.
So now just have to wait on recruiting to get back to me about the next stage.
How's everybody else doing?
Oh by the way, I found another site that you guys would be absolutely crazy not to check out...go to www.upholdtheright.com there's stacks of good info there for people trying to join Victoria Police and the forum is an absolute gold mine. I'm serious, go there NOW!
Cheers I'll check the site out now.
And btw the pervious post... Shocking. I was just extremely tired as I usually am when I jump on this.
Anyhow, I'm going to have a gander now.

I hope you went well!
1-3weeks to wait!
Good luck Brett

Hi Ally Thought someone may have been there from Police Prep.
I may have to re-sit the math component. I ended up having a brain freeze only answered half of the questions. I hope I answered them correctly!
Anyhow hope you did well also.
Good luck,
Brett.
Pft Math... You'll blitz it next time if you do have to resit the exam.
But, if you can pass the exams on here I think even though you got though half of them you'll still be fine. You'll get your pass.
I had a little brain freeze during the spelling. Couldn't rem if superintendent was with a ent or ant at the end. But, to my credit with about 10secs to go before pens down I changed it back to ent. I know I got three words wrong. Grievance - I spelt Greivance - NO IDEA why. And two others I made little mistakes. Hopefully I got the other 27 right. Spelling is not my friend and I spit on the tart.
Anyhow good luck again Brett and don't worry to much. I was upset when I stuffed up the spelling but hey thats why you get a second chance. Easily fixed... But my boy I have a feeling in my waters that you'll be fine.
Brett
11-14-2005, 02:27 PM
Hi Ally,
Yes superintendant for me doh!!
also had problems with Immensely i totally buggered it up.
I think maybe 4-5 wrong and could not put Grievance into a sentance, and I still can't.
Glad to hear you blitzed it!
Cheers Brett
The trick with the spelling and putting them in to a sentance is to give it a bash anyhow. The first time I did it I got 29 and I swear to you I guessed about five. I knew what they ment but like you had a problem with putting them into a nice sentance that made sence.
Phew it wasnt just me with Superintendent. I spent about five mins looking at that word. But I made a deal with myself. If I'm not sure if its ant or ent go ent. Most of the words are with ent. But that was my biggest problem with spelling. Ant or ent, or ci or si.
Oh well hope I fixed my game and got the pass this time.
Only one to three weeks till we find out Brett.
Just called my mum and my results are still not there. Why oh why did I get them sent to my parents house???
Oh well, another 11 working days at the max till I find out. Hopefully they come sometimes this week. I HATE THIS WAITING!
How are you guys going?
Brett
11-21-2005, 05:52 AM
YEs I am a bit toey , waiting to see my results will really make a difference to my long term plans as far as work goes. Then it will determine just what goal to achieve next!!
Cheers,
Brett.
Hey guys,
Haven't posted for a while so I thought I would just stop in for a quick update...I've had my station interview, all went well there, recruiting have contacted me to let me know they have received my application and recommendation from the local sergeant and they have given me a number so I can call for updates.
Now just waiting on the forms for my medical and a date for the fitness test...more waiting...
Hope you guys are doing well, best of luck with your results - may they come soon!
And don't forget to get over and sign up for the forums at www.upholdtheright.com - especially in terms of preparing for the next stages after the exam, it is invaluable.
Cheers, Paul
Your wizzing though the stages my dear Paul! I've decided that when I get my results I'll probably start the stages early next year. Give me time to work on a few things in prep for all the stages. I want to blitz them all.
I checked my BMI and I'm 4kg's over. Ops, bloody full time work packs on the kg's. So, I think I can drop those before xmas and be fine to start in the new year or just cut off my boobs... either way I'll get it done. I don't want to be slowed down by anything.
Otherwise my fitness is good. I'm reading the newspaper and being a good little geek and cutting out any related article to the police or anything that directly affects Melbourne.
I'm fixing my resume because at the moment its still directed to the industry I work in so I have to fix that and make it more police friendly.
Now, I just need my results. I actually contacted the exam place and they told me they will be in our letter box by the end of the week Brett. So we will either way by this weekend the waiting will be over.
No joke, 15 minutes after my last post the mail arrived with a letter from recruiting. They say that none of my previous traffic offences etc are a problem and they are processing me through to the next stage. I now have the forms to get a medical done with my GP, then after I have sent those forms in I will get an appointment with the Police GP for drug test etc, then onto the agility.
So the ball is still rolling forward!
I wouldn't worry about the BMI too much Ally, most people will be able to drop four kg's within 6 or 8 weeks (depending on how much extra they have to start with) without too much trouble at all. Let me know if you need any advice fitness wise, I have some experience there so if you have any trouble dropping the weight I would be glad to help.
Good luck with the results!
Paul.
Cheers Paul.
I should be ok I might start playing ABA again so with the training alone I'll drop 4kg's in no time. I've missed a bit but they have invited me down to train so I'll start that in a couple of weeks.
But, all I'm doing atm is eating smart, going for walks and riding my bike for day to day things. I'm just increasing my exercise every week. Probably hit the pool next week. And, the week after that start up bball again.
But well done... The stages seem to be wizzing by! I noticed on Seek the other day they are posting notices about joining the police force. They must be still pumping out the squads. So, if I play my cards right I can keep in the motion I could catch this current squad drive early next year.... Thats if I passed the spelling... BLOODY SPELLING. Bastards. - see I can spell bastard that should be enough!
I think you can be fairly confident about making it through all of the stages while they are still recruiting hard. From what I hear over on that other website I was talking about before, they could be taking up to ten intakes next year and they are running double squads at the moment which would mean around fourty to fifty people per intake.
I'm hoping I might be able to go in around march next year, from talking to some serving members and other people going through the selection process, my score for the first exam was really quite high, so if I do ok at the panel I could get a pretty good spot on the order of merit. I think it will probably take me untill around early feb sometime to complete all of the stages, so with some luck I might be able to get picked in a squad around march.
fingers crossed...
hey guys, i got my results on monday. i failed my maths, but oh well. im resitting it on the 10th dec, at chadstone, so i have to go far. the only other time around where i live is not til next feb, and i wasnt gonna wait that long. you know how i said i couldn't do long devision? well i can, i just had a look at it last night and i dont know how i missed it, but its simple. so not knowing how to do that made me fail. im sure you passed your spelling ally. good luck with all the rest of the stages paul.

That sucks Jo. But yeh now that you know what you need to do for maths you'll whizz it. I know how you feel same feeling for me when I stuffed up the spelling!
Welcome John... Advice hey. Well talking about math its not as hard as it is on here. You get 15mins. And as long as you can work out percentages and add on a percentage and subtract, long divison and place decimals you'll be fine.
The spelling is a biatch because I failed it first time hehe and I'm waiting to see if I passed it second time round. You must get 20/30.
You get 45mins for the multi choice (reasoning and english). My suggestion is that you do the easier questions first - the ones you look at and you know the answer within 5secs. And leave the harder one's to the end. They say in the exam you cannot mark the paper but stuff them!! You paid 70 dollars! They are trying to save a buck! What I did is cross off every question I did in the exam and when I went back to the start I wouldnt miss the questions I hadn't attempted yet after doing all the easy ones first.
And with the writing part try to write about two pages worth. They need it to be able to give you a full mark. I found during my exam alot of people left within the first 15mins. No way in hell they did two pages. And that could mean they failed.
The room is like any class room. Two to a table with a bit of cardboard between the two of you.
One mental note! When you walk in spot the tape recorder. Sit as close as you can! They will play the spelling test on that. And the first time I was sitting far away and this time I sat as close as I could. I think it made a difference. For obvious reasons.
You get little breaks between each exam (5ish mins) so you will get a rest.
This site I found useful but some of the questions on the reasoning are long and pointless. You get one direction question on the reasoning. EG
The Post office is 100m west of the Church. The Playground is 100m south from the Pools and the Pools are 100m from the Post Office. What Direction is the Church from the Playground? - ignor this questions it was a rank attept. But the question will be like that and you only get one of its kind. And only one question in realtion to it. Not four or five like on here.
You'll get Three Num Squares. Where you get nine nums in a square.
About 11 num questions eg 20, 10, ?
Then you get the four alike.
Golf Ball, Football, Lungs, Car, Wheel, Balloon
Obviously the golf ball and car dont match because they dont inflate.
Vocab questions etc
Ok this post is long enough... But I hope you find something amoung this to help. Good luck! And, if you are worried about one part of the exam spelling, math etc yell up because we can all help.

Hey Ally, Thanks for all that. Very helpfull. Will keep on file.
Im more worried the maths side of it so i am working on that. As far as spelling goes i think im ok, I downloaded the full list from the Vetasses Website. So im just choosing the hardest ones from that and testing my self.
And i guess im worried about going to the exam and being surrounded by a whole lot of (TALL and built like brick Sh*T houses) guys and feeling intimidated. I think that would effect my concentration on the exam. Eventually im going to have to just go for it. Im not over weight or unfit, i just aint the physically strongest person around, but im working on that also.
What part of Victoria are you from?
Jonn.
I'm from St Albans and dont you dare worry about height or size. Take a good look at the cops out on the street. If your taller than a 5ft nothing female you have nothing to worry about!!
I'm working on fitness I worked out i'm 4kg over my bmi. Never thought of myself as heavy but obviously I am hehe I hide it well because I am actually very tall.
And for age I'm 26, worked in media for seven years and always wanted to apply for the police force. My story goes I was going to move to Sydney for a Job but we had a close family member die. I stayed to support the family and for the support of my family. In the time I took off work I thought about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life and thought it was the perfect time to apply. So here I am, waiting for the results of my spelling after my second attempt and trying to drop 4kgs.
And yourself John?
Ops sorry ive done it twice now... JONN not John... hurhur please forgive me.

Forgiven! Everyone spells my name wrong.
Well i am 20 (dont laugh). Joining the Police Force is something I have always wanted to do since i can remember and nothing has changed. Only now im starting to do something about it. It would be a dream fulfilment if i got accepted into the academy.
When i started Year 11 i had also just started a casual position at a local supermarket. I liked having my own money so much and i just had lost interest in school so i took a full time job. since then have made it to Duty Manager, Dairy Manager and now im a Sales Rep. This is why i cant apply for the force unitil june next year, thats when i turn 21. When leaving school for work i honestly did not even think about how this was gonna affect my application with the force, and im regretting it ever since. Although i got a confidence boost the other day from a Sen. Const. He said that you have more chance with the force coming out of work/career, than coming from schooling or uni. Which is a good thing i guess.
And i still live at home in Noble Park.
Oh of course!!!!! Your life experiance! Sounds like a perfect path my friend. You've worked hard done amazing things and your only 20! Sounds like you have as much under your belt as I do and I'm six years older!
It will happen Jonn. I know its a long process but If its your dream and you always step in the motion of that direction you'll be rewarded.

Wow. This forum has certainly taken off. Im a Victorian in WA applying for the Police Service here, I had already applied back in June but failed the exam, hence my presence here! I cant re-apply until the 5th of Jan 2006. Been disqualified for 6 months.
My main weakness is Math, out of the 30? something questions I answered about 3-4 which I think were wrong anyway! Apart from that the first set of questions I ran out of time, leaving about 6-8 questions unanswered. That first set pretty much got me going thru the questions a bit quicker.
I was fairly upset about my result, but thats life, pull up ya socks on soldier on!
I have been very slack with my studies, I hate math, so im lacking motivation! I need to pick up on the fitness again, we need to reach the beep test of 10.1
anyways...Ill keep tabs of this forum and wait for a reply.
Anthony
You guys get to do the Beep test!!! I used to love the beep test. Probably not now a days with my older bones.
Anyhow, is the WA math exam like it is on here if so I'll check it out. I understand how you feel though I stuffed up the spelling on mine. Argh...
But, you should be hitting those math problems now. If its like the Victorian the math I swear to you it will take you an hour to learn all you need to know to pass then just practice up and till the exam, and you'll hit a home run! Your so close to finishing and passing this exam!
Hi all,
Jonn, sounds like you and I are in very similar situations. I am also quite young (21) and my major concern also was that I wouldn't have the physical size to handle the job, which is what was making me reluctant to apply. I can tell you from personal experience, in the exam was a real mix of people, guys and girls, younger and older, some big some not so.
I was pretty confident that I would pass the exam (I did end up getting a pretty good pass mark), but I still felt that once I got to the interview stage I wouldn't get through on account of my age and size. I have now had my station interview, which went without any problems at all, the sergeant was very happy to put me through to the next stage and didn't seem too concerned at all that I could do the job.
I think if it is what you really want to do, study hard, prepare really well for each stage of the selection process and you will be fine...And remeber, chicks get into the academy, they can do the job very well and many of them are probably significantly smaller and not as physically strong as you or I.
Best of luck everybody - I better go make an appointment for my medical...gotta get it done before I get a date for the agility - hope I'm healthy!
Cheers, Paul.

hey guys haven't been here in a while..using the other forum..sorry.. :? but yeah I see we have a few more members now..i have my fitness this sunday!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT????/ i cant..its gone sooooo quick...im so excited..and then after that all i have is my panel..im hoping to get into the march april squad..just need a good panel score to ensure that.. i need 40 or above for that and then im set..im sure I can do that!
hows things for you ally? pmedz?? hows it going..medical done yet? 1 day later after my medical recruiting called me and said do you want to do the fitness this sunday? for me it was now or never..cause there may not be another this year cause of christmas and all..
Well still waiting for my results should get them tomorrow. I hope I didn't stuff it up again. To think the only reason I stuffed up the exam twice would be because I can't spell. Even though I dont think I'm horrible I know I have issues. See, this is why spell check is wonderful.
Otherwise I'm just waiting around like a mofo.
But, good luck on Sunday tell us how you go...
Jonn, I am from Hoppers Crossing (western suburbs of Melbourne), how about yourself?
Spooky Steve, haven't had my medical just yet, been a bit crook the last week or so and check this out for bad timing...I got something stuck in my left eye a few days ago, which was quite painfull and difficult to extract, unfortunately it has actually scratched the surface of my eye slightly which has caused it to become a bit irritated. Anyway long story short, I'm just going to wait untill I am in a perfect state of health before my medical, don't want to have the slightest bit of a mark against my name - paranoid I'm sure, but better safe than sorry.
I'm hoping that I will get in for the first agility next year, then get a panel quickly following that, which might allow me - Order of merit permitting - to make a March intake. *fingers crossed*
Good luck with your results Ally, and best of luck for the agility this weekend Steve, I'm sure you won't have any problems.
Cheers, Paul.

Hey i was reading a few posts that are in this forum from a couple of months ago, and someone mentioned something about having to have a University Degree to join the police force. Whats with that?
JonnST
11-25-2005, 01:51 AM
Im from Noble Park Paul. South Eastern Suburbs
Forgot to put that in my last post.
Whoever said that is lying my friend its not true whatsoever.
They judge you on many things. Sure a uni degree might help, but those with a uni degree might not have life experiance ie working, travel etc
Seriously ignor who ever said that and be happy that all the steps you've made so far are the right one's for you. You'll be fine.
AGAIN no results another weekend of being a rotten bitch to my house mates.
Have a great weekend all :D

hey guys first off I passed the Fitness...YAY!!!! and the swim...yeaH!!!!    now its off to the police medical doctor and then the panel.... Wooohoooo...
secondly...medzz....as of 2007 you will need to have done a bachelor of policing...to enter the police force..without it you wont be accepted...so this is what they mean when they say you have to have a uni degree..its been confirmed..they're just waiting on which uni's will be offering it...
and secondly..ally...hang in there..they will come this week for sure..

Congradulations Steve!! Well done.
I actually went for a drive past today at about 10am, could'nt see much just heaps of cars.
So was it harder or easier than what you thought it would be?
Congradulations Again!
Ahh of course I forgot about the changes.. But thats 2007. That gives us two years possibly a few more because the course will take at least three years.
I'm banking that it wont take that long but who knows.
Anyhow well done Spooky! This week will soon decided my fate for the following year. Lets hope I impoved. I had to! I only had to improve on one and I studied my butt off. Time will tell.
Good news, I passed!
Flying colours! I am now what you call a 'not so bad' speller now!
Cant wait till the start of next year! Thats when I'm going to start my application!!!
Look out guys I'm on your trail!
Congratulations Ally :D
So planning to start the application next year? I don't know how you could possibly wait! I was dying to get to the next stage...and then the next stage...well you understand, I just want to get on that order of merit, I don't mind a bit of a wait once I'm on, I just want to know for sure which way everything's going to go so I can relax.
Patience is a virtue I guess
OHH GOD I wish I could start now but I dont want anything slowing me down!!! I have to lose about 6kg to be in the right BMI, and in my mind thats dooable by the new year. Even if I'm close I'll start because by the time I'll get the doc exam I should have dropped the weight required!
Its killing me that I cant start right away. But I'm just so happy I got the exam out of the way. I was so worried I would stuff up again!
So, tell me more about the station interview... What kind of questions do they ask?
Well at least you now have that first stage sorted and untill that change comes in with the selection process (that whole degree thing) your exam results will stay valid (my understanding is that they don't expire no matter how long you take to complete the stages).
As far as the station interview goes, people I have spoken to have faced a huge range of different things. Mine was conducted by a sergeant who had not done it before, he was quite easy going, read my resume, asked why I wanted to join and where I might like to get stationed and that was about it. After about five minutes he said that he was happy with the way I was presented, that clearly I had the mental aptitude for the job as my exam score was reasonably high and that I spoke well, keeping eye contact with him etc so he was happy to pass me through.
Then he spent about the next 15 minutes talking about what to expect from the panel interview and how to do well there, then he talked for quite a while about the advantages of being stationed at werribee and encouraging me to apply for that after the academy. Then fingerprints and I was out of there, too easy! I think he just took a very practical approach to it all.
I have spoken to other people though who say they where grilled for 45 minutes and more, given lots of hypothetical scenarios and asked to respond to them and basically put through the ringer to see what they can handle. Seems to be a case of luck of the draw somewhat.
I guess the key is to be really well prepared, expect it to be very hard and be ready, that way you will be fine whatever they throw at you. Check out that other site I keep going on about and read everything you can there, old posts, scenarios etc and you will be fine.
Best of luck with it all! I'll be having my medical soon, I'll let you know how it goes...fingers crossed
Steve
11-28-2005, 06:49 AM
Congratulations Ally...Well done..Good Job my friend! :D
dont worry too much about the station interview... just be ready for anything as medz said..
hey medz..when's your medical? im waiting on the next stage now guys... my medical with the Police doctor..and then my panel...lately they have been on the same day for people and some a day or two apart..so im hoping its before the end of the year, that way im fresh for the new year..and hopefully up there in the 70 and above...congratulations again ally..nice job!!!

11-28-2005, 07:35 AM
Hey Ally!! Condratulations.. Well done.. You must be over the moon. Hope you were too much off a biatch to your house mates! :)
On average, how long does it take for you entrance exam results to arrive at your house??
Thanks guys.
Well Jonn the first time it only took one week. This time it took two weeks.
And, I was nice to my house mates I was actually really relaxed this weekend.
But, finally its all over and done with. Back to working on my butt checks and bingo wings - which I dont have by the way, but give me 25 years and I'm sure I'll sport a lovely pair of them!
Hey Steve, going for my medical in about a week. I would be fine to go now, but I don't think there are any more agility tests for the year anyway, so it probably won't make any difference to do it today or a week from now.
So what was the psych test like Steve? Does it take long? Anything diffiult about it?
Steve
11-30-2005, 10:56 AM
hey medz..the pysch test was ok...576 true or false questions..took over an hour to do..the guys did the psych test first while the girls did the fitness test and then we swapped..the questions are weird..i wont go into to much detail...but as i said just true or false about yourself...eg: i love mechanical books? I would Like to be a teacher? I have thought about killing myself? hahahaha...there's those and 573 others...hehehe oh and even a few about your sex life..so watch out!!! :P :P
haha, sounds like it might even be good for a bit of a laugh. Can anyone actually fail?

u can fail if ur a psycho medz.....are you?
ummm...I guess I'll find out either way once I've done the test!
Hey Jonn, there is indeed a fitness course at Maryborough which is open to the public (I believe it is on the corner of Majorca and Gillies Rd's). I haven't been down before, I'm actually planning to go check it out this Sunday, but from what I have heard, one or two obstacles are missing and the place is a little run down but still well worth a look.
Head on over to www.upholdtheright.com and sign up for the forums, there's been some chat about it over there. You'd be mad not to check out that site anyway if you are planning to apply for victoria police, it is a goldmine of information.
Steve
12-02-2005, 04:09 AM
hey medz you mentioned having a scanner..where did you get it from and how much..im interested in getting one!!
Hey Steve, any Dick Smith or similar will have what you need, i bought mine from them for $199.
I just bought the most basic model they had available, it's called a Uniden UBC72XLT. It just uses two double A batteries and it actually has the police frequencies built in so you can just hit a button and it scans all of the police channels automatically. I also tuned mine in to do all of the western suburbs (around home) and the city via presets. It's an interesting way to learn just a little bit more before you hit the panel and eventually the academy...and it gets pretty entertaining on a Friday or Saturday night when it's all happening!
Dick Smith have some info about them on their website, also tells you which stores have stock etc.

If so how was it?
Didn't make it down unfortunately Jonn, got caught up at the weekend. I'm hoping to get down there one day this week though, I'll let you know how it goes.

How did the Math go? Did you feel good like ass afterwards?
Hope you all had a good weekend!
Just a quick update...
Had my medical with the local GP this morning, everything went fine with the exception of my eyesight, which the doc was a little bit worried about. He sent me to get an assessment with an optometrist who was happy that my eyes pass the minimum standard for Victoria Police but I do need some new glasses for driving at night etc.
Anyway, happy ending resulted after a few nervous moments thinking my eyesight would be the thing to stuff me up and now it's back to waiting for recruiting...fitness test is next *fingers crossed*
Ahh thankfully your peepers are all set to go!
I'm working alot atm so get though till next year and then I can start my application.
I actually have to buy a new outfit. I don't have any formal interview wear after working in entertainment for the past four years.
Ok, hope your all well and getting all that xmas shopping out of the way.

Howdy all,
It's been a while since my last post. Great to hear you passed the Spelling Ally, unfortunately I failed the Maths, suprise suprise, I thought it might have been the writtenI would have failed!! Anywhoo since thisis the silly season and my current Industry is booming this time of year, (Hospitality) I will resit early next year after my wife has baby No#3, and I take leave and study, phew... long winded. post.
Over that period I hope to loose the extra 8 kilos I piled on over the last 6mths. Plus a bit more just to be sure.. A hard slog for me coming up but It is worth it.
I know how you feel. But you can easily fix it up and re sit. If I can do it with spelling you can do it with Math.
Congrats on the 3rd baby. You and your wife are baby making machines!
I also have to lose about 8kg's. I'm still aiming for the first month of next year to be ready to take my application further. I'm playing ABA (basketball) again next year because I'm filling in a spot on the roaster. I can't believe they seeked me out I haven't played for a couple of years. I hope I still have the moves. Anyhow, I'm happy as pie because I miss basketball and it will surely help me with my fitness without thinking.
Off to do the Tan tomorrow (just found out thats the jog in the botanical gardens)... Lets see how I go. I hope all the riding, walking, swimming and good eating has paid off. This will be a true test of my fitness. God I love exercise but running I find sooo boring. But, it has to be done.
Well I'm off to finish some work. Take care all!
ops that post above this one is mine :D have a good weekend!
Hey people, im still waiting on my results for the maths part. but i think i did really well. i did all questions in the ten minutes and got to check over them for the rest of the time. it was easy, i flew through it. hopefully i did well. im confident that i did. i tell you all when i get it. have a merry christmas everyone.

Well guys the Police Medical is now OVER! and I passed hehehe...
Now all I have to do is wait again! I want my PANEL DATE!! By the looks of things I probably wont get one now until Jan. Which is fine by me, I just hope its not too late in the month. I want to try and make the march intakes.
Fingers crossed people!
Hey everyone,
Just received my exam results and I am happy to say that I passed!
My overall score was 188. Is this an average sort of score?
Just debating as to when I should book in my interview. Should it be in early Jan as Christmas is apon us?
Steve - Is the physical hard?
Hey Karl, congrats on passing the exam.
With regard to your station interview, I would give the local station a call and see when it best suits them. Quite a few people I have spoken to have had their station interview the next day or within a couple of days of booking in...the sooner the better hey? Don't be too concerned about the station interview, it's pretty informal (or mine was anyway), just turn up looking neat and confident, have your resume ready and look the Sergeant in the eye. You'll be fine.
I think 188 is about average, remember that 50% of your overall score comes from the exam and the other 50% from the final panel. So I would think that as long as you get a decent panel score it should be enough.
The other thing I strongly recommend is to get over to www.upholdtheright.com and sign up for the forum there. It's much busier than this forum, lot's of serving members there to chat with as well as other applicants. It really is a big help as you go through the process.
Good luck with it all. Cheers, Paul.
Steve

Hey Karl,
my response to your question \"is the physical hard?\"
Not at all my friend. As long as you have a general fitness standard, you will be fine. Practice each part though, before you go, so that you have an idea what to expect. Go for a swim at the local pool, and time yourself.
Jump a few fences and run everyday to get used to it.
But it's really not that hard. Hope this answers any other questions you may have.

Hey Everyone,
Merry Christmas!
Have a Safe & Happy New Year to you all!
Talk to later :-)
Jonn.
hey everyone, how was your christmas? i got my results before chrissy but couldn't get on the net. i got 10/10 for my maths. a big difference to the original score i got. hey i was wondering with the swimming part of the fitness test, is it just ordinary stroke? or something they want you to do?
Well being a swimmer I'm not to concerend. But from what Ive seen and read your head must be out of the water and I think its breast stroke. But, I'm not 100percent. Anyone else?
Steve
12-28-2005, 07:54 AM
hey guys, the stroke must be a life saving stroke, ie. breast stroke with head out of water, polo freestyle...
Anything thats a life saving stroke and your head MUST be out of water. You can change stroke half way too.
Ahh I thought so but I couldnt rem the name off polo etc. But, I knew it had to be a life saving stroke.
Can anyone tell me what height the platform is in the fitness test? Thanks!
I believe the platform is 1.35m, which is what they have on the information they send you after you have the station exam, but it seems kind of low, maybe Steve can tell us for sure, he has done it. The information also notes that the chain link fence is 2.4m in case you are interested.
Cheers, Paul.

Hey guys, yeah the platform is the height that is on the information sheet you should have received. Medz had the height in his last post. You cant use your legs or anything to get you up. You must ONLY use your arms and upper body strength.
Its easy if you practice it. And the chain link fence is a little bit of a pain also. But like the others, if you practice at your local park or school you will have no problems.

Thanks pmed and steve, now I can practise. I am using a little athletics track which has the 400metre track and chain fences. The height of the platform is much lower than what I thought, I have already been using my gates at home which are that height.
I havent done the police station interview yet, they told me to send in the application form which I did 3 weeks ago and they will call me when I can come in. Thats different to what you guys did I think?
And thanks to whoever mentioned the upholdtheright site, its excellent.
Steve, how fast should 400metresX2 be run in, to be able to pass do you think?
Hey Rebekah,
The time limit for the agility is 6.30, in that time you have to complete firstly a lap of the 400m track, then run about another 200m around to the back straight where the obstacles start (they are just off the side of the track along the back), then after you do the obstacles, the handcuff simulator and the dry fire of the gun, you jump back on the track and run the last 150 or so to the finish. Basically it's two laps of a 400m track with the obstacles perofrmed on the second lap.
I did the test Sunday just gone, and I passed in a time of about 4.40. I ran the first lap in just around 2 minutes, which gave me heaps of time for the obstacles at the back and then the run home.
Don't forget that the agility is not scored, you just get either a pass or a fail, so of course do your best, but as long as you get it done in under 6.30 you will go through to the next stage.
Hope that helps, any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Cheers, Paul.
P.S. You might have noticed that the upholdtheright site is a fair bit more active than this one, so if you ask any questions you might have over there you will probably get a quicker response.
rebekah68
01-10-2006, 11:41 AM
Paul,
Congratulations!! :D Thats a fantastic result! 4.40 is really really good, I do just the two laps in just under that so I really need to get to work. I can easily run on a treadmill for an hour but running on the track is so much harder. Thanks so much for your help, I will work on running faster over the 600 metres and go from there.
I was thinking of those doing the test on Sunday, it was SO hot, I felt sorry for you all.
Any weird questions on the questionaire?
Also, I agree that the other site is busy, there is new topics and hundreds of replies daily.
All the best now with your medical!

Paul,
I just read your info on the upholdtheright site, feeling unwell didnt make a difference!! Even more congratulations are in order!
Thanks Rebekah, yeah being sick didn't help much on the day and it was pretty hot, but there was no bloody way I was going to let anything stop me from passing that test! The run actually felt alright most of the way through, it was just after I sprinted home I really couldn't get my breath back and I felt pretty ill, which killed me on the swim, I thought I was going to pass out after about 30m but I just held my breath and kept swimming...thrashing...struggling...whatever I got there!
Are there any weird questions on the psych test? More to the point are there any that aren't weird! Do you like to tease small animals? Do you hear voices but don't know where they come from? Do you like mechanics magazines? I was trying really hard not to laugh at half of them, it was pretty amusing.
rebekah68
01-11-2006, 05:12 AM
They are weird questions, but at least they are straight forward answers, I wouldn't have to ponder on any of those. All false of course (in case you were wondering) .
The sergeant just called me and made an appointment for an interview - at last!! Its Sunday at 2.00pm.
Yeehah, I'm on my way!!!. Lets hope he doesnt put a stop to it....a person I know got turned down at this stage.
LOL - I would say yes to one...I actually do like mechanics magazines, I was an apprentice for two years.
Good news about the station interview. Don't panic too much, most people seem to get through these ok as long as they are properly prepared. Do the basic things like make sure you are well presented, sit up straight and look the Sergeant in the eye, be confident, polite and friendly. You'll be fine.
Be ready for the \"why do you want to be a cop?\" question and \"what have you done to prepare?\" etc. All the basic questions you would expect them to ask. You might also get some scenarios thrown at you, common sense is the name of the game, also have a read through the scenario village over at UHTR to get an idea of how to approach them. A search on UHTR will yield a tonne of advice for people going through this stage of the process, read it all and take note and you will have absolutely no problems at all!
And get ready, they are recruiting a million miles an hour at the moment so you could be through the whole process really fast. Even with the Christmas/New year break my application has only taken from late October (first exam) and I should have my panel and PMO coming up in the next month or 6 weeks, so it's pretty quick.
rebekah68
01-11-2006, 10:47 PM
Thanks, I will do that!
I am actually really looking forward to the interview so I can get to the next step.
I read last night on UHTR that it took one guy getting in almost a year. A friend of mine going in the academy FEB 06 did his exam last May, yet you are flying through, what a great time to join!!!

hey guys, been here for a few months but 1st post.22 yrs old and i want to sit the exam sometime this year, in the next 4 months hopefully, i seem to be fine with the maths, english reasoning etc. but the only thing i am stressing about and how to prepare for is the writing task???? if u get a task with points of information-wot are you supposed to write. are u just supposed to make up a story with the facts in it, or just state what happened if u were givin an accident for the task?i'm really confused!!!!!because how are you supposed to stretch that out to 2 pages??
Hi Carolyn,
In the exam I sat it had 2 topics to choose from. The one I chose had about a call made to police about a girl going home from school and was being followed. So you then had a put in a pile of made up details (I described the man and had other people in it too ie neighbours etc). I only made it to 1 1/2 pages and that was stretching it BUT I only just passed so that was a relief.
BUT the really good thing is that your writing score does not count for your end result. So it doesnt matter how you do as long as you pass.
I think the other story was about protesters infront of a building.
Anyway, just go for it!!!
I'm 99percent sure the writing score does count for your final score!
You will be given two topics. On our day from memory (been awhile now) we could choose between 1) a local store robbery or 2) write a letter to the police on behalf of your school inviting them down (along with both of those was information)
I picked write a letter. They indicated in the information that the children where out of control and didnt trust the police, and we wanted to build a relationship between the school children and the police. So I was writing on the behalf of a school teacher to the police.
Its not to test your ablility to actually gather information its your ability to write a clear statement or piece of writing. You can basically say whatever to get your two pages. I could have wrote my letter in half a page, but I just took my letter off in to about three different parts. Good idea to spend five mins before writing scribbling a direction or steps you want to take.
I wrote before I started a few points so I had a start a middle and a end and things I obiviously wanted to cover and at what stage of the letter.
It is different to the writing tasks on this website but I adjusted easily on the day. You will be fine. If you could write a story at school, write an email to a friend you will be fine my love.
If thats all your worried about I wouldn't worry and book yourself in! The writing tasks on here are different to the ones in the actual exam but the same principle. All you need to know on the day, is what I'm writing clear? Have I got my 2ish pages and if it is..... PASS! They recommend you do two pages (they dont tell you in the exam btw) but its so they have a piece to mark. Half a page, page just isnt enough to know your ability as a clear writer.
Good luck, Al
I know this might seem a bit odd, but the writing component won't actually count to your final score. Here's why...
Your final score is based fifty percent from the first exam and fifty from the panel at the end.
When you pass the exam, there is a formula used to convert your score to a mark out of fifty. The formula is, total score, minus writing component, divided by 4.2
example for me...215(total score) minus 36 (writing component) divided by 4.2 = 42.62
So as you can see from that, it won't matter what you score on the writing component so long as you pass. All the same, it is well worth being properly prepared for the section so that you can be sure to do your best on the day.
I've said it a few times now, but if you want good information about the recruiting process, get over to www.upholdtheright.com, the forums there are absolutely INVALUABLE!
Cheers, Paul.
Cheers Paul,
I stand corrected... Either way its important to pass.
Now I'm going to work out my final score and enjoy the rest of my Day off...
Time for a jogskis.

thanks guys, that puts my mind at ease a bit more. i just get worried that i'll freak out a bit in the the actual exam. its all good, i'll be good now, cos i guess its hard to study for when u don't know wot the scenarios will be ey!!! cheers
Thats it... I didn't study for the writing I must admit and I passed easily.
As long as you have a pinch of a creative flair and can string a sentance together you'll be fine... Actually no need for the creative flair. If you can write a sentance you'll be sweet like ass.
You can type here? Well just write for another two pages worth.

Don't stress. The typically hardest part I've heard along the way is the Math and Spelling. Those are the two most re-sat parts. I had to resit spelling because I'm not one with the spelling. Darn my multi lang. background!
Anyhow, the moral of this story is to relax study and if you fail... Shoot you can resit! I did, and I passed! Do your best and I'm sure you'll hit a home run first time. But, if you don't... you do have a second chance!
If your 18 you've been doing written exams for the past few years! Your in a better positon than most! You'll be fine... and if you have questions we are all here...

You get to resit sections you've failed?
Fantastic!
Hi everyone. I'm training to apply for the Police Force in Western Australia and have just signed on with PolicePrep. Unfortunately, if one fails the written test here, you must wait for six months before being eligible to re-apply again (... that's for the entire test!).
Ally, I know how you feel.. im 24 years old and maths is my ultimate weakness. I excel in spelling and grammar no problems. I've been training physically since late November '05 and have lose 12 kilos!
I'm 192cms and weighed 92kgs.. that's a BMI of 25. I am now at a BMI of 22.
It seems that there are alot of differences between the Victorian and WA written tests. For example; I've noticed that there is a 2 page report you have to write up.. this doesn't seem to be included in WA (which is good for me, as I can be quite an impatient writer..!).
I'll pipe up for now, but I look forward to talking to all of you.
Finest Regards & Best Of Luck

I am from Sydney and am applying for the WA police. NSW wouldnt let me in because of my colour blindness (only slight problem but they said no). But as alot of people, i am shocking with maths also, and thats the only part i am not looking forward to. I have just started getting back into shape with my exercise, I have always been pretty fit, but it sure does take it out of the the first time you go for a jog after so long.

By the way with the re-sit thing, I thought it was only if you fail the phycametric testing (tic and flick exam) that you had to come back and resit. And in WA its only 6 month wait, all other states its 12.
Jared.
Hi Jared!
When I first went to apply years ago.. a friend and I were talking to a recruitment officer and ofcourse I found out (after six months of training) that colour blindness was an issue. I was heartbroken to say the least.
Two months ago, the WA Police issued an announcement stating that colour vision over here is now not a problem regarding entry into the Police Force. I consider that an amazing blessing.
However.. if your colour blindness is hampering your progress, then there is another possibility you may consider..
How is your overall sight? Do you wear glasses or contact lenses at all?
I wear contact lenses to corrent my vision and my optomologist recommended a way to counter my colour deficiency. It basically involves tinting the contact lense to a single primary colour (in my case: red), and wearing the tinted one over the dominant eye. What this does is seperates the colours and allows the brain to sort of highlight certain types of colour.
I first wore it for ten minutes and then took the Ishihara test to see how it affected me. Jared.. I saw every number in the book!
This was going to be my course of action.. to wear them permanently and get into the force. Until the announcement ofcourse. So keep that inmind if it's causing you trouble with getting in, and if you have any questions about it, dont hesitate to ask.
Regarding fitness, yeah it hits you when you first start out.. but once you really push yourself everytime you're out there you will feel great after training. Your energy levels in general will improve (less feeling mopy and lethergic), aswell as reflexes and general self being. Your body will definately thank you for it.
Last night I went for a swim and I pushed it so hard, I could barely walk in a straight line after I got out of the pool! One protein shake later and I was good to go.
That's me for now. Take care

Steve,
I noticed on their website a few weeks ago they took away the colour vision testing. Which helped me alot. That is the main reason i am joining another state other than NSW, as NSW police require me to pass the book test (which i failed 16 out of 16 plates :/). However upon studying into the WA police i come to the conclusion that it is not so bad joining there after all, NSW is the only police force in Australia were you need to pay your own way throught training. Plus me working in a Sydney Hospital doing Security, i liase with police alot from here, and not many of them are keen on the job. But as for these contacts, have you any idea what they are called, and where to get them? They may come in handy.
And yeh, i went for a run yesterday, and i ran so hard, that i could hardly work (no joke hurt to much!). I downloaded the beep test and will be trying that this week.
And are you in any police service at the moment? or in the recruiting stage?
Oh, and any advise on the Math testing part of the exam's, if i fail that does that mean i do not get in because i am shocking at math, was my worst subject during school.
Thanks for advice!
- Jared.

Steve,
I asked you a question you have already answered :P, with already said you were joining WA police. But i am still curios to know what part of the process your up to, and if you know how bad the math exam is!.
Don't stress over math guys.. if you look at the earlier parts of this forum you'll find advice. All from us Victorian's.
If its any thing like the victorian math exam you'll be fine. I must admit I had to brush up on a few things but nothing that didnt take a split second to re learn.
Good luck boys...
sjaworski
01-31-2006, 04:43 PM
Im shocked.. NSW requires you to pay for your own training? Ouch!!!
As for the contact lenses.. there isnt a certain type at all. Infact, the brand of contact lenses that I have been wearing for over 9 years now are able to be tinted (ProVision is the company that makes them and ProComfort is the type). They are one monthly soft disposables. Talk to your local optomologist about it, and explain your situation. I doubt this tinting procedure is limited to only a few operating practices. They showed me how it's done and it looks to be a simple task. They just add a coloured dye to the centre of the contact lens.
As far as my road to the Police Force, I'd say Im 90% there. I want to be at my very best; both physically and mentally, before I put in my application form. After that is sent in and accepted, you recieve a letter stating what date you need to attend the 3 hour written test.
Ally, Im curious to know how the Victorian Entrance Exam is structured in regards to subject matter and timing.
I'll break down the sections and required scores in each to pass the WAPOL Entrance Evaluation:
*Spelling (80 / 90)
*Verbal Reasoning (23 / 30)
*Language Usage (40 / 50)
*Abstract Reasoning (45 / 60)
*Maths ( 28 / 34)
This information was obtained from a Police Entrance Evaluation preparation program a friend of mine enrolled in. Apart from Abstract reasoning, the cutoff is VERY tight, as you can see. Can you imagine, a six month wait for getting, a 215 / 264 ? That would damn near KILL me! lol
Shite thats alot harder than ours and I thought we had the bad end of the stick.
This is from memory...
Spelling - 20/30 - 15mins abouts, to spell and then write the word to display that you understand the meaning.
Reasoning - 35/70 -
English - 45/70
Maths - 5/10
Written - 35/50
Then, when we pass (you get a second chance if you fail a part but after that chance you cannot re-sit for another 12months.)
You go for your station interview
medical/fitness/mental
Pannel
Wait
in or out
then the whole process starts again if you dont get in within a 12month period.
sorry the end of this was rushed I have to dash to work :D
Good luck people

Well, Like i said, t he math is the only part i will struggle on.
As for the contacts, ill look into it with the doctor at work (perks of working in a hospital). And see if i can get them.
And i am also doing the same with WA police, preparing myself before i apply. I should be sending my application next week. Just wanted to browse around this site first.
And for the NSW police, yeh kinda tough, you need to make your own way through the course, and i think its a 6 month course.

Only 10 maths questions!?!?!
I'm moving to Victoria! LOL
I've just taken the 1st Entrance Evaluation exam and I got 77 / 95 (81%). I finished it in around an hour. Made some easy mistakes though.
Jared, I can definately confirm that failing the the WAPOL Entrance Exam will leave you out for another six months. Here's the direct quote from the WAPOL Recruitment Information guide:
\"If you fail to meet the minimum standards you are not permited to re-sit the Entrance Evaluation for 6 months.
Have you taken any of the PolicePrep exams yet Jared? They're quite well rounded and ought to be a good indicator to see where you stand. Also where abouts in Perth are you staying at the moment?
Also have you got your Senior First Aid Certificate and your Computer & Keyboard Skills Certificate? If not, its no big issue. They must be received by the Academy within 90 days of your application being handed in or your application will be cancelled. Im looking for a list of local institutions that offer these, and will post up a list for future candidates. I'm yet to obtain them myself. I'm planning to get them either this week or the next.
Ciao fer now

Hi Everyone,
All your posts are really useful, this is a great forum. I just got my results from the exam I took 2 weeks ago and I passed! Does anyone know how long it would (hypothetically) be until I would get into the academy from now.
Assuming that I get through everything ok, and get accepted, would it be 3,6,12 months roughly? I am looking at signing a lease on a house and am unsure on the time scale!
Anyone who has an idea, please let me know what you think!
Thanks guys, good luck!
Lucie
Hi Lucie,
It's a bit hard to judge how long the process can take for any particular person. I've spoken to people who have gotten through the whole process from exam to induction in around 6 or 7 months, but there are others who have taken more like 12 to 18 months and even longer.
It all depends on whether you pass each stage on the first attempt and also how high you score on the order of merit at the end of it all.
I personally started the process back around the middle of October last year, since then I have done the exam, station interview, agility and psych testing, now I'm waiting on dates to see the police medical officer and to have my panel interview.
Hope that helps to give you at least some idea.
Cheers, Paul.
Thanks Paul, that's really helpful! I think I'll go ahead and sign the lease! Good luck with it all. Lucie
Hey my little angels...
Ive been absent for some time with work ect but I went in to book my station interview on Tuesday and you know what.... I'm sitting my station interview tomorrow at 3pm. Hopefully the next few stages are as quick.
Can't wait, I have a kick ass suit, pretty new shoes and went to the hair dresser for a lovely colour and cut. - such girlie things to say.
Anyhow, hope your all doing well with your steps and look forward to hearing how everyone else is going.
Al
Good luck with the interview Ally.
Just a quick update for me too, I received a letter from recruiting yesterday to inform me that I am booked in to see the Police Medical Officer on Monday morning at 9.00am.
Then it's just one more stage to go!
Thats fantastic Paul! Hopefully in the next few weeks I can catch up and you never know my love we could be heading off to boot camp together - yes I'm living in a fool's paradice... But, you never know!
Can't wait till 3pm today! Only problem... its going to be 31 and I have to go in a suit. Now I know how it feels to be a man on a daily basis working in a firm where a suit is required.
Good luck for the medical paul!

Just an update from me also, I had my medical with my doctor only on Tuesday and sent in the completed form that day. I called up recruiting today (Thursday - 2 days after medical) and asked if they could please tell me approx when my agility will be. They asked if I would like to do it THIS SUNDAY!! So therefore I am in a nervous panic, I think I am ready although I haven't climbed any fences or up any wire fencing but have been timing myself running twice around a 400 track. I will workout hard tomorrow - have a day of rest Saturday and eat lots of carbs and go for it Sunday.
Will let you know how it goes and I did find out that there are no fitness tests during March.
Any update on the interview Ally? Mine was shocking.
Really, no fitness test in March! That's a real shame and annoying bugger for me!
I think it went well. I'm happy with my application and I think I handled his questioning well. He was very formal and I think he was trying to razzle me a little to be honest. He would ask me a question then two questions later ask me a similar question that required the same answer.
Either it was a way of interviewing or he wasn't listening to my answers. But, I spoke to my mate who is in the Army and when i told him the questions ect he said he got the same kind of interview when applying for the Army. So who knows. But, I still feel confident that I'll get put though.
Good luck for Sunday! I wish I was comming along also! I'm ready to run my booty off and swim like a fish! I guess I'll have to wait a month!
ARRRGH!

Well guys and girls, today my dreams finally came true. I have been Provisionally Selected for the April 17th Squad!!
Im over the moon!
Its been a long road, I think I was the one who originally started this thread and now 6 months later, I have finally reached my goal.
Too all of you currently in the selection process, keep at it. If you want it that much, you will get there in the end. It might take a while, but you WILL get there. Keep at it.
Steve :D
FANTASTIC!
Well done steve! Hopefully if I play my cards right in April I can finish the other stages and get in a squad later this year.
Make sure you keep us up to date with everything! I know you'll be busy with your 6am starts but check in!
Great news for the weekend!

CONGRATULTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How exciting, I can only assume you are celebrating as you should be! So they give you 2 months notice before starting, thats plenty. Do you know what your OOM score was? How long ago did you do your panel interview?
I hope you don't mind me asking these, it is just very interesting to have a little insight in this whole ordeal.
Well, all the best, you have done fantastically and its great that someone from here is through!!!! :D
As I said in a recent post, I completed the fitness tests today. I passed!!! Yeehah!!!
It was hard despite all my training and running, nearly half the woman failed at some part.
For all those about to do it, make sure you can run 2 laps in 4 mins and strengthen upper bodies. I completed the course in 5.48 mins (you are given 6.30 mins) but many others were only just making it in.
All the best for those about to do it.

Well congratulations to you ALL!!! (Especially SteveB, Well done mate!!)
You have all come so far in such a little time and you should be proud.
Myself on the other hand, im currently doing the prep course. I plan to sit my exam first week of april. I would do it sooner but its not going to make a difference because i cant apply till June anyway. I just hope im not too late. They seem to be pumping the recruits through at the moment. Its gotta slow down eventually. I just hope i dont miss the boat.
:-) Congratulations to you all again!
Jonn Stewart.
Thanks heaps John, I know the double intakes are slowing this April, so we have all missed out on those except for Steve.
But do not despair, they still think that they are short staffed and the promised 600 extra applicants has not happened yet. They are still getting through the application process alot faster than before. Considering I had a medical and agility in the same week, that is unusual.
All the best for the exam, study hard and do your best and let us know how you do.

Well guys just an update from me:
Ive received my paperwork for the selection in April, sent it back and now Im waiting on the OFFICIAL Induction pack that gets sent out to all new recruits. It comes with a CD with pre-reading and general stuff about the first day and what you need to buy before you go in. Should be getting that In the next few weeks. Once they have contacted my current employer.
What about the rest of you? Where are you at? What are you all waiting on, and if you've had your panel interviews what have you scored?
Would be great to get an update from you all.
Cheers :D
Steve
Hey guys,
I've done my station and I've been put though (which is common the next part is the real test)...
Anyhow, I was wondering how long you guys waited? They tell me police checks take about 6weeks... But, from watching progress of other people sometimes that is quicker. How long did you guys have to wait for your police checks to be done?
I just hope its quick so I can do the fitness in April, I don't want to wait till May. I will if I have to but I just want to keep on truckin as you can all understand.
I've done the length and timed myself and I can jog 900m in two mins so I guess I'm on track. And I can swim 50m in 35-40 secs (counting in my head, bloody pool near me dosn't have the clock outside).
Otherwise I'm just reading up as much as I can and I'm going to try and get this girl I know who is in the force to sit down with me and have a chat.
Hope your all doing well.
Al

Sounds like your on your way Ally, good work.
How was your station interview. Which station did you have it at?
Regards,
Jonn.
I did mine even though I'm living in StAlabans at Doncaster (family lives in bulleen and I'm still living there for mailing/voting blah blah blah)
I think the guy interviewing me was tired or trying to confuse me with his questions. He kept asking me the same thing over and over and over again. But, I think it went well. I'm a lovable type of person (if I do say so myself). I do have confidence after working in promotions and radio for several years so that paid off. Before that I was incredibly shy.
Hopefully my police checks are done reasonably quickly so I can get in for the fitness at the end of March. If not I'll be in the April pool... I'll be happy if I'm on the order of merit by the end of April.. Thats the aim... And I know I have no control over it but it would be nice :D
Back to fitness and I'm going to try and get 1k to two mins. I can do 800m's but I want to work on 1k and get that in a nice package of 2mins. I'm not worried about swimming its just the jogging. I just hate it. So boring. Hard to motivate myself to go.

Yeah i hate running too, yet love swimming.
All the best Ally!
Just another update, I had my Police Medical last week. It was okay, and I am declared fit which is all that's needed.
I did find the scales 1kg over - compared to mine, my doctors and Weight Watchers. It takes about one and a half hours and you do a eye, colour blind, hearing test and urine sample first. Then you wait to be called by the Doctor, and spend time jumping, doing all sorts of movements and being weighed and measured.
The better news is that my Panel is on the 17th March. I am already nervous!!! I just keep thinking 'this time in 2 weeks it will all be over' looking forward to that!!!
Just a warning to any female about to do the agility, the chain fence is easy (I didnt practise) but the females either fail on the platform (getting up it) or fail on the left hand gun trigger. So do finger weights as it was pretty tough. The platform I think is higher than the 1.35mts told, as I could easily get up that height but had to have another go to get over that actual one.
Keep us informed!!
No David, its not multi choice you have to show working out and get the answer :D
But, the questions are not as hard as they are on here.
If your worried I'll put my email on here and i'll mail you the type of questions you will encounter.
Good Luck
ignor that post, something went all weird and ehh just ignor it!
I'm not worried about the platform I'm actually a tall lass and my mate who just got in!!!! Is alot shorter than moi made the jump. But, I will work on my squeeze ball to make sure my left hand is strong enough for the trigger pull!!
Well done on the stages!! Good luck on the Pannel! Apparently there is a chart in the waiting room you have to read and store in your noggin... Tip time, my mate said when she was in the room the chart is behind the people conducting the interview. So, if you feel like your going to forget something look around the room and you'll more than likely see the chart!
Tell all! Hopefully I can catch up soon! I'm waiting for police checks so I can do the fitness, and then pannel!
All the best!
Ally the chart in the waiting room should be known BEFORE you go in. And it is not always the same room that your are interviewed in. So dont rely on having it on the wall in the room.
It's the code of conduct and code of ethics, (SELF test). This should be memorised and studied WELL before the actual interview. It's part of Victoria Police and is VERY important to know now and once you are selected.
This should be part of what your study and preparation before going for the panel interview. If you haven't studied it I suggest you print it out and get to it:!:
Yes I know that.
I was only saying that if your stressed you might be lucky enough to see it in the room your in.
I may not have expressed myself clearly because when I wrote that post I came off a long shift and was extremely tired.
Anyhow, good luck to you all and to all a merry night/day argh I'm tired again. Sleep is highly overated.

Anyone know where you can get that chart?
Sure do. Go to...
http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=100
It's on the left hand side of the screen, in a little box titled \"Downloads\"
It's worth having a really good read of everything on that site too.

Hey everyone.
Great to hear all your stories. SteveB, congratulations. All your hard work and effort has really paid off. I wish you all the best at the Academy.
Two weeks ago I submitted my application and just today I received a notice of my written evaluation which is going to be held on the 11th of April.
I cant wait. I have also noticed that after the written evaluation is finished, there's also a personality test that will be conducted after a short lunch break. There's a time limit on this one too.. 2.5 hours.
So it should be a long, yet rewarding day for me.
Ally & Bek.. if you find it hard to get motivated when it comes to running, I recommend doing it along the shoreline of the beach. The sea air and water on your feet helps your body recover quicker, not to mention the sand being healthier on your ankles (in regards to shock).
Well ciao for now.

I PASSED THE PANEL!!! :D  :D
My overall score is 77, and they are accepting from 68 at the moment. Looks like I will make into the May squad. Its so exciting to be over it and passed it all.
First, thank you so much Medz for the advice to look up that website, it was so important to know all they said on that and to study alot of the VIC Police web site too.
Mainly, study the code of ethics and conduct and what it means to you. Learn and study every type of scenario there is and what you would do. Get advice from police for that. Go to a local station and sit in with them and that is really good for preparation as they will ask about that too.
Have examples ready from everything you have done in relation to the topics of what they are looking for - you get that in the mail often.
Hope this helps you guys about to do it. There were only 10 questions really, and then some basic ones - yes and no answers. Took less than half an hour for me.
Congratulations rebekah!!! Well done..
Thanks for the advice too.
Jonn.

Thanks alot, its been a great weekend for me!!! Its very exciting to get this far, now its preparation for the academy!!
All the best for your application Jonn!
Congratulations Rebekah, that's great news! Do you have your OOM yet?
I'm glad UHTR helped you as much as I think it will help me - I'll find out when I do my panel two weeks from now...fingers crossed.
You never know, if they don't pick the May intake in the next two weeks, we could even be squaddies!!! I doubt it though, I'm guessing they would be due to announce May selections very soon. I'm not that worried though, I don't care if I have to wait till June or July, as long as I get in!

I was told yesterday that I have been picked for the May squad, but it all depends on my medical 'fit' coming back in time.
My OOM is 33, exam and panel score is 77. Thats made up of 39 for the exam and 38 for the panel.
They said today (recruiting) that they are accepting from
scores of 74. Plus its a double squad which is lucky or else I wouldn't be getting in. This is the best year to join, if it wasn't for the extra recuits being put in I would need to have at least a score of 80. That would be hard as each point is alot of knowledge and work!
All the best Paul for the panel, let us know as soon as you know how you went.

Hi, will do Steve, I will be a month behind you but at least I will see you graduate! :D
I will be on grad duties so I am told. The whole academy thing sounds quite daunting. Two hours study a night....make that three for me. I don't want to fail. Plus weekends too.
But on the other hand, I am looking forward to getting stuck into it!!
Hi all, I just wanted to give a quick update on my progress...
I sat and passed my panel on Friday last week, it went really well. I called RSB this morning to get my final score, I finished with 85 overall which actually puts me straight to number one on the OOM.
I'm absolutely beside myself!
How is everybody else going?
