View Full Version : Private Police
Is there any 'private police' in Canada? I have heard there is but I don't know what type of police force, people consider to be 'private'?

Police, by nature, are public servants. The only thing that is private is the various types of security companies that are out there for hire.

Those are still public. Universities are public institutions. Railway and TTC are ultimately run by the government. I think they only truly private organizations would be private security companies. But they don't have powers like public peace/police officers.

Not the railways. CPR Police answer to the Canadian Pacific Railway Corp, likewise with CN. They have to abide by gov't regulations, but they are private police forces. CN and CP Police have all the same powers as any Muni/Prov/RCMP member have, with some restrictions regarding proximity to railway property (have to be within 2km, I think).

TTC S/Cst., CN/CP rail police, GO Transit, University Police ARE PEACE OFFICERS, they have full police powers, however only on their property.
So, yes, they would be considered \"Private Police\" Because they are owned by corporations.
