Hi There,
With winter here my regular jogging routine is becoming more difficult with the snow and ice. I don't have access to a gym or gym equipment so are there any suggestions anyone has for keeping up with the cardio indoors with limited equipment? Is skipping a good one? If so how long should I be trying to do it for?

There are plenty of resources on the Internet to help with indoor cardio. As for skipping that is a great way to keep your cardio up if I'm not mistaken 15 mins of skipping is the equivalent of a 1 hour jog. I still find as long as the sidewalks are clear I run outside no mater how cold it is a treadmill is just not the same.

I agree about running outside, I wouldn't use a treadmill even if I had one!! I know that there are plenty of suggestions on the internet regarding indoor cardio I was just asking to possibly get somebodys personal experience and thoughts about it. Thanks for your input Hummer!!

A treadmill is still useful. I combine treadmill running with outdoor running. The great thing about running outside in the cold is that you breath better, and therefore have more endurance. I find that I run further than I did before. It only sucks when you first start out because you haven't warmed up yet. But also, you can run up and down stairs.

If you live by a shopping mall and can go first thing in the morning, they usually open up the mall doors a couple of hours before any of the stores open. You could do laps that way, and window shop at the same time...lol.

Hey bella I'm using the treadmill in my local gym mainly because i don't want to fall on my ass running outside, even though I know you can get those running spikes.

I have to agree with hummer though running on a treadmill is definately not the same as running outside.

Other cardio you can do are making use of ellipticals and spin classes

Using the treadmill is fine as long as you also do running outside to compliment it. I too do not like running in the winter as it is much harder on my breathing. So, unless we go through a warm spell I suspect I will be using the treadmill more.

One thing for me is I run in a tourist area so the sidewalks and other areas are ice and snow free. So other than trying not to freeze I run outside all year round.

I might sudgest getting yourself a heavybag and try punching and kicking.it will give you a good cardio workout( time yourself out a few three minute rounds if you are just starting) and will help out your defensive tactic skills at the same time.

Remember not to undermind tools to keeping fit. If you don't like to run in outside in cold or being stared at in shopping mall, no choice but to join a gym with indoor track or invest in a treadmill.

I myself see nothing wrong with the treadmill. Of course running outside is more pleasurable.
As long as you keep the speed up and the incline up you'll have no problem. I did most of my training on the treadmill and had absolutely no problem with the shuttle or circuit.
Good Luck

I appreciate all the feedback, thank you!! I am not against the treadmill at all, I just find it boring. Running, running and .... going nowhere. I much rather run outside and enjoy the fresh air and the scenery, but that's just me. I just recently got over a knee injury that put me out of commission for awhile and am wondering how long I should give myself to get back on track before attemping to take my PREP. Any suggestions there?

Have you ever done the PREP? If you are at 100% and have been running regularly the shuttle run should be easy. What are you doing to prepare for the pursuit portion of the physical?

I have only done 2 practice prep sessions, both were with the O.P.P and they don't do both the pursuit and shuttle, only the pursuit... which I passed both times. I've been lifting weights for a long time (18 months), but I haven't been doing to much cardio over the past few months due to my knee issues. Now that I am all healed and ready to go I am just wondering what I should do and how long should I prepare with cardio before I attempt the PREP? I started a military pyramid workout today and it was killer!!

Download the beep test you might even be able to find it on here if you search.Throw it on your Ipod go out front of your house measure 20m on the sidewalk and actually do it. Just by practicing it your timing gets better you use less energy and level 6.5 is over before you know it.

You will see the people who have done the test numerous times there at the line just as the beep sounds and turning ready to go no waiting.
