Congrats.

I will be applying to Toronto next week. It's too bad I'm a little late for the January Police College start date. Is Toronto looking for more people for the next start date? Or are they pushing most of the people through for January?

Toronto was a better fit for myself than Durham. I respect both Forces but Toronto is the best of the best; and I feel Toronto gives myself the better chance for advancement.

Thanks and Good-Luck To Everyone..........

I just emailed yourself.

Just wanted to send a quick email to wish everyone the best of luck in the pursuit of their dream. I am leaving for Aylmer on January 8th and with the work-load; lack of internet access; and weekends dedicated to family I won't be monitoring or participating in the PolicePrep from effective immediately.

The best advice I can give is the following:
1. Once you have your O.A.C.P. Certificate give Jason Cockburn an email at jason.cockburn@policetesting.ca for mentoring with the LFI and ECI.
2. Be Honest and admit everything on your application package. As my BGI Officer stated - at the end of the Bcakground they will know you better than your parents and in some cases yourself.
3. Don't Give Up - If you are unsucessful in any portion of the O.A.C.P. or interview Process; wait your required time and re-apply.

Again Best of Luck..................

Hey BDV. You say to be honest and admit everything..

I have no problem with that, but I can't remember a couple if little issues that happened when I was younger.

If I was to go to a Police Station and have them run a check on me, would it give me everything I need?

I just want to have all of that information on hand, and I don't want any discrepencies.

Any thoughts?

Try to be honest with everything. If you have a \"shoplifting\" or anything like that and you don't disclose then you might be taken out; because it would be on your record. Disclose all negative instances with the police. You cannot go to a police force and get them to give you your record. You can contact the Ministry of Transportation for driving.

Thanks. I am actually going to a Police Station today to get an extract done on my name. I called them yesterday and it costs $40. I just want to be sure that I know everything that has happened to me over hte years.

Just in case.

Good News. I just did the Police Record check and it came up clear. I was just worried about one time when I was like 17-18 (15 years ago) that I was charged with under-age drinking. I still may bring that up just in case if I ever get an interview.

Thanks

I just noticed that when I got the Police Records Check it said I had no 'criminal' records.

I'm not sure if this is what I was looking for. I was hoping it would show if I had any under-age drinking charges when I was young. Or maybe it was open booze in public. Would these have showed up on this?

Or maybe I never did get a ticket. This is what I was hoping to find out.

Any ideas? Or am I looking for another type of records check?

01-04-2006, 12:11 AM
Remember - just because it does not show up on the form that you got does not mean that the BGI officer will not find it somewhere. Best to disclose on your application package.

Just my opinion..............

Definetly. I am going to be totally honest. A couple of things happened 14-15 years ago that I can't remember if I received a ticket or not. I will tell them that it happened but I am not sure about the ticket. I was also just hoping that that info would show up so I could be sure of dates and the location of exactly where it happened. Are there any other background checks that I can get that will show those types of charges? I don't think a drinking in public charge 15 years ago would show up as a criminal offence.

I wonder if I could call up a Police Officer friend of mine to see if he could run a check.

Open liquer or being drunk in the public are provincial offences - not criminal offences. You can't run a check on these like you do with a criminal offence because once you have paid the ticket your offence is purged off the system. If you had a POA offence, it would show on your criminal record. It looks like you are clear.....

Hey fjacky, I wouldn't worry to much about it since it was so long ago. Be upfront and honest just like Bdv said. You where young then.

Thanks Guys.

I plan on being honest, I just didn't want to forget something and have them think I was hiding something. If I happen to forget something, will they mention it to me? This way I can still come clean.

Both those offences, \"drunk in public place\" and \"open alcohol\" are Provincial Offence offences. You can't run a search on these offences because they are managed through the municipal offices, and once you have paid your ticket, it is purged off their system. These offences would still show up on your criminal record, so if yours came out clean then I won't be worried about it. Hope this helps.

It sounds like you are trying to finds things to ommit from your interview or application. I'm not saying that is your intention but thats what it looks like. I would halt from investigating yourself any further and just wait for the interview. At that time fully disclose your past even if you cant remeber exact details, but something like that would be something to remember, unless it was frequent.

Just my opinion.

I am not worried about the things I have done. They were over 10-15 years ago. I just wanted to make sure that I was right about everything. I don't know about you Antrophec, but I'm over 32 years old and the little things that happened to me when I was 16-17 are a bit foggy.

Thanks for your input though

Sorry, I didnt mean to come across aggressive, if that is how its seemed. I was told by a retired opp recruiter that any search about relative information in your past comes up in the interview, and could possibly be taken as something negative. Even if you had good intentions when investigating your past. They could possibly look at it like you are trying to find out what you can disclose or omit. I was told this directly from a retired recruiter that it is something that should be avoided if at all possible.

So, you think that me going to get a Criminal Records check was a bad idea?

To be honest, after I did it I realized that it was a 'criminal' check. I knew I had no criminal record.

If that comes up, I'll just explain why I did it and hopefully they will understand

Fjacky - don't panic. Everything will fall into place for you. If they ask why - be honest. They aren't out for your blood, just your honesty. This is such a stressful process, don't let it drive you crazy. Every step you take to reach your goal is building your skills to prepare you for your career in police services. Relax, hope this helps ....

That seems a bit confusing cowboylaw so I'm going to expand on it a bit.

CPIC only deals with criminal offence (criminal code)

The tickets that were being discussed, as you said, are under the provincial offence act. Those *ARE* recorded and put in to a records management system. Eg: When I issue somebody a POT, after they are convicted, it is entered into Niche RMS (database, used by many services, including OPP)

When a background check is conducted, they will do both a CPIC and RMS check (Niche, Versadex etc)

Thanks Dafez,

Is there any way one could get one of those background checks?

Again, I just don't want to think I am trying to hide something when it's just that I have forgotten some things because they happened so long ago.

Thanks again

From reading your earlier messages, if it was 14-15 years ago and it was NOT criminal (IE speeding, LLA) I wouldn't worry about it.

Relax, you'll be fine :)

fjacky

What is LLA?

Dafez says it better than I - relax, don't worry so much about it, start concentrating on the next step .... take a deep breath fjacky!!! All the best
