I have a question regarding push ups. What is the proper hand position? I've tried doing them shoulder height tight to my body, but wowzers... they are tough. How far can my hands be out to the side to ensure proper form and efficency?
At OPC, are women expected to do push ups from the knees or toes?
Thanks

I'm sure at OPC they want it done a certain way, but varying your hand positions will help work different parts of your chest. For example putting your hands up where your shoulders are will work your upper chest and keeping them lower will work your lower chest. Keeping your hands close together works your inner chest and keeping them further apart works your outer. _________________ TPS Application-March 2, 2009

There are different techniques targeting different muscle groups like mentioned before. OPC doesn't really care unless you're asked to do a specific test eg. PIN test. There you must have your hands shoulder width apart with elbows tucked in. Females have the option to do them from knees or toes.
Hope this helps. _________________ OPS |

Bella, I also found doing push ups difficult, especially from my toes...but that's now how I do them. Keep at it! You can do it! Just start slow, what I did was start on stairs, Maybe your hands are on the third stair for a little while, than the second, than the first, than the floor. I still find them hard, and don't get as low as I like, but I'm doing 3 reps of 12 now, and looking forward to doing more!

I believe the proper push-up in when you are down, you must be able to touch your shoulder with your thumb. I think women are allowed to do the knees on the ground push-up. It has to do with where the weight is centered in a male body vs female, not anything to do with men are stonger... I practise both ways just to be sure. _________________ waiting for results.... |

Just to clarify- you do not have to touch shoulder to thumb everytime you come down.
Lay flat, put your hands where they feel comfortable, stick your thumbs up/out, can you touch your shoulder- yes? your hands are the right position. Pike hips or get on toes and begin push-ups. _________________ waiting for results.... |

The way that is described in the guideline for the PIN test is that you start with hands under your shoulders ( to maintain shoulder width) and then push straight up till your arms are completely extended.
On the down motion you are to go until your chin hits the mat but not your stomach or thighs.
Hope that helps give you an idea. _________________ LFI - January 15th - Passed

Lie chest-down with your hands at shoulder level, palms flat on the floor and slightly more than shoulder-width apart, your feet together and parallel to each other.
It very hard to do even you're not a trainee. _________________ Police Jobs |
