Converting Decimals to Percentages to Fractions

Instruction

It is important to be able to convert decimals to fractions to percentages. This is very easy to do.

Percentage to Decimal Conversions

In order to convert a percentage into a decimal all you have to do is move the decimal point two spaces to the left. For example:

76% = 0.76

100% = 1

147% = 1.47

6.89% = 0.0689

3% = 0.03

0.65% = 0.0065

In order to convert back from decimals to percentages, simply move the decimal place two spaces to the right.

0.89 = 89%

1 = 100%

0.31 = 31%

1.53 = 153%

99 = 9900%

0.18 = 18%

Converting Fractions to Decimals

In order to convert fractions into decimals, simply divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). For example:

1/3 = 0.333…

15/2 = 7.5

2/4 = 0.5

7/6 = 1.166..

9/100 = 0.09

13/9 = 1.444…

To convert from decimals to fractions, the easiest way to do this is to create a fraction based on a denominator with a multiple of 10. The multiple will depend on the number of decimal places that exist. If there is one decimal place, then the denominator should be 10, two decimal places then 100 should be used. If the number is greater than one, then the whole number must be excluded from the fraction. For example:

0.5 = 5/10

1.65 = 1 65/100

0.09 = 9 / 100

0.8567 = 8567/10000

7.4 = 7 4/10

3.7 = 3 7/10

Fractions can then be broken down to their lowest form. This can be done so long as there is a common factor that both the numerator and denominator can be divided by. For example:

5/10 = ½ (both can be divided by 5)

65/100 = 13/20 (both can be divided by 5)

4/10 = 2/5 (both can be divided by 2)

7/49 = 1/7 (both can be divided by 7)

Converting Fractions to Percentages

It is easiest to convert either format into a decimal and then convert the result to either a percentage or fraction. For example:

9/25 = 0.36 = 36%

42% = 0.42 = 42/100 = 21/50

15% = 0.15 = 15/100 = 3/20
