Common Units of Measurement

The following units of measurement are very common and should be memorized.

Measurements of Length

12 inches = 1 foot
3 feet = 1 yard
36 inches = 1 yard
5280 feet = 1 mile
1760 yards = 1 mile

To determine how many feet there are in a given number of inches, simply divide the total number of inches by 12. For example:

36 inches = 3 feet
59 inches = 4 feet 11 inches

Measurements of Weight

16 ounces = 1 pound
2000 pounds = 1 ton

Measurements of Liquid

4 gills = 1 pint
16 ounces = 1 pint
2 pints = 1 quart
4 quarts = 1 gallon
8 pints = 1 gallon

Dry Measurements

2 pints = 1 quart
8 quarts = 1 peck
4 pecks = 1 bushel
32 quarts = 1 bushel

Measurements of Time

60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
7 days = 1 week
30 days = 1 month (approximately)
12 months = 1 year
