Scenario A
Read the following information and respond accordingly.
To: Afternoon Supervisor
From: Store Manager
Subject: Late Staff
Date: April 30
We have been receiving complaints from some of the clerks and cashiers that the support workers have been arriving to work late and on occasion missing shifts. The support workers are very important for the cashiers during the busy afternoon rush. All four staff members have been late twice over the last two weeks. John seems to have missed his shift on Friday afternoon and Simon was absent from work on Wednesday.
I believe you are the best person to deal with the situation, as you hired the four students to fill the afternoon positions. Please prepare a report on the reasons for the above absentees and any actions you feel are justified.
Your Sincerely,
John Albino

Hey, it’s Bill here. I just wanted to let you know that for the next two weeks we are writing exams at school and me and the rest of the guys might be a bit late on occasion over the next two weeks. We realize our jobs are important and plan on making it to work, but some of our exams run late into the afternoon.
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Bill

Subject: Missing Shift
Date: April 22
I wanted to apologize about missing my shift yesterday. There was a family emergency as a vehicle struck my little brother. I had to rush him to a hospital and I couldn’t call in until the store was already closed. It shouldn’t happen again and I apologize for not calling in.

John, I apologize. I should have been more up front with the cashiers and yourself in regard to the support staff. As you know, all four of the support staff are students and have been excellent workers to date.
On April 15th I received a memo from the students telling me up front that they were going to writing school exams and may be late for shift over the next two weeks. Because it was such a short time frame I just instructed the students to arrive as soon as possible when they completed their exams. The exam sessions should be completed and there should not be any more staff arriving late.
In regard to missed shifts, Simon notified me the day after his absence that he had a legitimate family emergency. I have not received any information from John about his absence on Friday.
Going forward I will speak to the support staff to see if their exams are finished. I will also speak to the cashiers explaining the situation regarding the late students. I will speak to John about notifying us if he is absent from work. I will determine what to do with John after I know the reason for his absence.
Once again, I apologize about not keeping you and the rest of the staff more informed.
Yours Sincerely,
Afternoon Supervisor
